Process, influencing factors, and simulation of the lateral transport of heavy metals in surface runoff in a mining area driven by rainfall: A review

Pengwei Qiao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the lateral migration of heavy metals in water flow and sediment particles, investigated the main factors affecting the transport processes and mobility of heavy metals in soils, and summarized the existing simulation methods for heavy metal transportation. The construction of a lateral migration model based on migration mechanisms and hydrological models should be the focus of future research. This study provides a theoretical basis for establishing a model of lateral migration of soil heavy metals and is of great significance for the prevention and control of related risks.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Pollution of Agricultural Soil, Irrigation Water, and Vegetables in and Nearby the Cupriferous City of Lubumbashi, (Democratic Republic of the Congo)

Felicien Mununga Katebe et al.

Summary: Lubumbashi, the capital of copper mining in DR Congo, has been known for its rich mineral resources for over a decade. However, the mining activities have led to pollution of soil, water, and vegetables in urban gardens, posing serious health risks. The study found that the soils had varying levels of metal contamination, with some exceeding the WHO thresholds. Irrigation water used in the gardens also contained high levels of toxic metals. Furthermore, the vegetables grown in these gardens had metal contents that exceeded the WHO standard for human consumption. It is important to adopt more sustainable techniques to reduce the transfer of metals from soil to plants.

Removal and magnetic recovery of heavy metals and pesticides from soil by layered double hydroxides modified biotite

Hanhan Huang et al.

Summary: A novel LDH@Bt composite with a three-dimensional hierarchical structure was successfully fabricated via in-situ growth method. The LDHs were uniformly dispersed on the Bt surface, resulting in improved removal performance for Cu2+/Pb2+ heavy metals and GLY/MCP pesticides compared to LDHs and Bt alone. Kinetics of heavy metals and pesticides removal were well described by intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption isotherm data showed better accordance with Freundlich model for Cu(2+)and Pb2+, while Langmuir model fitted well with GLY and MCP data. Different adsorption mechanisms were proposed for the removal of Cu2+/Pb2+ by precipitation and GLY/MCP by surface adsorption. The application and recovery ability of LDH@Bt composite in soil were evaluated, showing promising potential for the remediation of heavy metals and pesticides contaminations.

Antlers of European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) as monitoring units to assess lead pollution in a floodplain contaminated by historical metal ore mining, processing, and smelting in the Harz Mountains, Germany

Catharina Ludolphy et al.

Summary: Lead concentrations in the antlers of European roebucks in the floodplain of Innerste River contaminated by historical mining activities were analyzed. The study found long-lasting impact of metal ore mining, processing, and smelting in the Harz Mountains on lead pollution in the floodplains and lead exposure of wild herbivores. The suitability of roe deer antlers for monitoring environmental lead levels and the usefulness of lead isotope signatures for source apportionment of lead pollution were highlighted.

Silicon fertilizers, humic acid and their impact on physicochemical properties, availability and distribution of heavy metals in soil and soil aggregates

Keqi Zhao et al.

Summary: It has been confirmed that Si fertilizer and HA could effectively decrease the heavy metals in soil. Nonetheless, the impact of these additives on soil aggregate characteristics was ignored. The results showed that HA and SHA supplementation significantly decreased the availability of Cu, Cd, Pd, and Zn.

Potential Heavy Metals Pollution Contribution from Wash-Off of Urban Road-Dust

Muhammad Faisal et al.

Summary: This study estimated the potential pollution load of heavy metals from street dust to surface runoff in different functional areas of Zhengzhou using the rain-scour heavy metal index model. It was found that the rural area and industrial area had a higher contribution to heavy metal runoff pollution. The indices for pollutant load and pollutant strength varied greatly in different land-use areas.

Heavy metals in road-deposited sediment and runoff in urban and intercity expressways

Shuohan Gao et al.

Summary: The study found that RDS on highways are primarily composed of coarse particles and contain higher concentrations of heavy metals compared to background soils. The concentrations of heavy metals in RDS increase with traffic volume, indicating a correlation with traffic activities. Additionally, heavy metal concentrations in road runoff from suburban highways are higher than those in urban highways.

Rapid diagnosis of heavy metal pollution in lake sediments based on environmental magnetism and machine learning

Xiaolong Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that environmental magnetism combined with machine learning can be effectively used to monitor heavy metal pollution in lake sediments. Analysis of magnetic parameters and heavy metal concentrations in Chaohu Lake sediments revealed ferrimagnetic minerals as the primary magnetic minerals and significant variations in heavy metal concentrations across different seasons, with Cd and Hg posing considerable ecological risks. The utilization of physicochemical indexes and magnetic parameters in predictive models significantly improved accuracy, with SVM showing better performance and potential for efficient long-term monitoring of heavy metal pollution in lake sediments.
