Grazing weakens N-addition effects on soil greenhouse gas emissions in a semi-arid grassland

Summary: Grazing and anthropogenic nitrogen enrichment have interactive effects on grassland soil greenhouse gases (GHGs). Moderate grazing can reduce CO2 emissions and N2O uptake, while nitrogen addition increases CO2 emissions. Grazing and nitrogen addition have an antagonistic effect on CO2 emissions and CH4 uptake. Adjusting grazing intensity is an efficient strategy to mitigate GHGs emissions in grasslands.

Mixed cattle and sheep grazing may be a more environmentally friendly and sustainable practice for the Inner Mongolia grassland than single grazing, as single grazing was found to be more detrimental to dominant plant species' functional traits.
