Comammox Nitrospira Bacteria Are Dominant Ammonia Oxidizers in Mainstream Nitrification Bioreactors Emended with Sponge Carriers

Tuo Huang et al.

Summary: This study proves the dominance of comammox Nitrospira in low-strength ammonium wastewater biofilm reactors. Despite variations in residual ammonium concentration, comammox Nitrospira consistently dominates the nitrifying guild. The study highlights the crucial role of biomass retention in comammox prevalence.

Selective Enrichment of Comammox Nitrospira in a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor with Sufficient Oxygen Supply

Jing Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reports the dominance of comammox Nitrospira in a high-dissolved oxygen concentration moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). The advantage of comammox Nitrospira over canonical ammonia oxidizers in the high-DO MBBR is attributed to the low residual ammonium concentration. Two clade A comammox Nitrospira were identified and found to be spatially distributed on the surface of the biofilm.

Comammox Nitrospira Species Dominate in an Efficient Partial Nitrification-Anammox Bioreactor for Treating Ammonium at Low Loadings

Yung-Hsien Shao et al.

Summary: This study revealed the important role of comammox Nitrospira in wastewater treatment, particularly under low ammonium loading conditions where their ammonia oxidation activity is significantly affected by free ammonia. This provides new insights into utilizing comammox Nitrospira for partial nitrification-anammox processes.

N2O and NOy production by the comammox bacterium Nitrospira inopinata in comparison with canonical ammonia oxidizers

Ping Han et al.

Summary: Ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms play a major role in global atmospheric nitrogen oxide emissions, with comammox bacteria showing lower NOy production compared to AOB. The lack of enzymatic activities for NH2OH and NO transformations in comammox bacteria may lead to a buildup of NH2OH/NO, potentially contributing to N2O formation through abiotic reactions.

Simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal from simulated digested piggery wastewater in a single-stage biofilm process coupling anammox and intracellular carbon metabolism

Wei Huang et al.

Summary: The SAIC system showed enhanced TN and TP removal efficiencies compared to the reference, with denitrification driven by intracellular carbon contributing significantly to TN elimination and phosphorus mainly removed through biological routes. The synergy of multiple metabolic pathways, including anammox, (partial) nitrification, endogenous (partial) denitrification, and biological P-removal, was observed in the SAIC system, supported by the commensalism of various microbial groups.

Defluviicoccus vanus Glycogen-Accumulating Organisms (DvGAOs) Are Less Competitive Than Polyphosphate-Accumulating Organisms (PAOs) at High Temperature

Li Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that at high temperatures, glycogen-accumulating organisms are less competitive in anaerobic VFA uptake compared to polyphosphate-accumulating organisms, contrary to previous observations. Different types of glycogen-accumulating organisms also exhibit differences in competitiveness in anaerobic VFA uptake.
