Influencing factors identification and the nested structure analysis of heavy metals in soils in entire city and surrounding the multiple pollution sources

Pengwei Qiao et al.

Summary: Identifying pollutant sources and analyzing the nested structure of heavy metals are crucial for soil pollution prevention and control. However, research comparing main sources and nested structure across different scales is lacking. This study investigated two spatial extent scales and found that: (1) the point exceeding standard rate of As, Cr, Ni, and Pb is higher at the entire city scale; (2) As and Pb exhibit weaker spatial variability at the entire scale, while Cr, Ni, and Zn exhibit stronger spatial variability around pollution sources; (3) larger structure of Cr and Ni, and Cr, Ni, and Zn at the entire scale and around pollution sources, respectively, contribute more to total variability; (4) various factors with different influencing distances can lead to nested structure even at a small spatial scale. These findings provide a basis for determining remediation and prevention objectives at different spatial scales.

Summary: This study evaluated the pollution level of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from non-ferrous metal smelting activities and quantified their sources. The results showed that industrial activities were the main contributor to ecological and health risks, pointing to the need for strict management and control.

Source analysis and source-oriented risk assessment of heavy metal pollution in agricultural soils of different cultivated land qualities

Xufeng Fei et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the interaction between soil quality and heavy metal pollution. The results show that with increasing soil quality, heavy metal contamination and ecological and health risks increase significantly. Industrial activities, agricultural activities, and coal combustion are the major pollution sources. Policies should be formulated to control industrial pollution and improve the ecological environment.

Quantitative analysis of ecological risk and human health risk of potentially toxic elements in farmland soil using the PMF model

Summary: Potentially toxic element (PTE) pollution in farmland soil is a global problem. This study explored a comprehensive scheme that combined source contribution and risk assessment to quantitatively assess potential ecological risk (PER), human health risks (HHR), and priority pollution sources. The study found that industrial activities contributed the most to the ecological risk, while natural sources were the greatest contributors to human health risks, particularly for children.

Distribution Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Soils of the Typical Karst and Non-Karst Areas

Weijie Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution characteristics and hazard levels of heavy metals in karst soil in a mountainous county in China. The results showed that the levels of heavy metals in karst areas exceeded the background values, while non-karst areas did not. The presence of heavy metals in karst areas was mainly influenced by carbonate rock parent material. The potential ecological risk in karst areas, especially for Cd, was higher compared to non-karst areas.

Quantitative analysis of the main sources of pollutants in the soils around key areas based on the positive matrix factorization method

Pengwei Qiao et al.

Summary: In this study conducted in Beijing, quantitative identification of the main sources of heavy metals and PAHs in soils was carried out using the PMF method. The concentrations of Pb, PAHs, Cr, and Hg in soils were found to be significantly influenced by landuse type, road traffic, natural factors, and industrial production, respectively. Factors such as farmland, distance to main roads, specific parent materials, soil types, and industrial production made greater contributions to these four factors. The four-factor PMF solution was deemed stable and appropriate, providing support for comprehensive control of soil environmental risks.

Summary: The study assessed the contamination and health risks of heavy metals in soils around various types of non-ferrous smelteries in China, finding that some provinces had severe soil pollution exceeding standards, especially around copper smelteries. Strategies to control soil pollution around non-ferrous smelteries should primarily focus on Cd and Pb.

Ecological risk assessment of Cd and other heavy metals in soil-rice system in the karst areas with high geochemical background of Guangxi, China

Qiong Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration characteristics and influencing factors of heavy metals in rice grains and corresponding soils from karst areas in Guangxi, China. The results showed that the proportion of karstic soil samples with heavy metal concentrations exceeding standard risk screening values was higher than that of surface soils in China. Cadmium and arsenic were found to be the most enriched heavy metals in the soils, leading to a proposed threshold for safe utilization and risk control of cadmium in karstic soils in China.

Source identification and comprehensive apportionment of the accumulation of soil heavy metals by integrating pollution landscapes, pathways, and receptors

Xue Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new approach for identifying and attributing sources of heavy metal accumulation in soil by integrating pollution landscapes, pathways, and receptors, leading to improved accuracy in identifying sources of soil heavy metals. By developing a source landscape model considering spatial distribution and runoff, and adjusting soil Pb accumulation using geographic regression models, the spatial distributions and contributions of identified source landscapes to Pb accumulation through different pathways were determined.
