Electrokinetically-delivered persulfate and pulsed direct current electric field induced transport, mixing and thermally activated in situ for remediation of PAHs contaminated soil

Dongdong Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel strategy was proposed and proven to enhance the delivery of persulfate (PS) to soil by electrokinetics (EK). The application of pulsed direct current (DC) electric field thermally activated the PS in situ, promoted PS plume mixing and contaminants-free radicals reaction, and replenished PS to achieve efficient degradation of contaminants in low permeability zones. The results showed that EK transport rate of PS in soil was 12.3 times higher than diffusion. Irregular pulsed DC field maintained the targeted temperature during activation phase, resulting in the generation of oxidative radicals (SO·4/·OH). Electromigration and electroosmosis also promoted PS transport and reactive mixing, enhancing the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil. PS concentrations in pore fluid increased with continuous fluctuations. Long-term low-temperature activation led to a significant decrease (nearly 60%) in average concentration of PAHs in the whole soil cell over 10 days. These findings demonstrate the great potentiality of the novel strategy in remediating low permeability contaminated soil.

Application of KHSO5 for remediation of soils polluted by organochlorides: A comprehensive study on the treatment's efficacy, environmental implications, and phytotoxicity

Belay Tafa Oba et al.

Summary: Soil pollution caused by complex organochloride mixtures is a growing concern worldwide, leading to significant exposure of individuals to hazardous pollutants. This study investigated the potential of unactivated peroxymonosulfate (KHSO5) in remediating soil co-contaminated with trichlorophenol, para-dichlorobenzene, and para-chloro-meta-cresol. The treatment showed a high oxidizing efficiency for the total pollutants and had limited impacts on certain soil properties, making it an ecofriendly and cost-effective method.

Disturbance and restoration of soil microbial communities after in-situ thermal desorption in a chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated site

Jiali Shentu et al.

Summary: Thermal desorption technology is widely used for organic contaminated soil remediation, but it may alter the soil properties and its safety reutilization. After thermal remediation, the target pollutants were reduced significantly and the soil microbial alpha-diversity decreased by more than half. However, the restoration of the soil microbial community to its initial state before thermal remediation was not achieved in a relatively short time.

Remediation of industrial site soil contaminated with PAHs using stage persulfate oxidation activated by Fe2+chelated with sodium citrate

Yue Gao et al.

Summary: The remediation of industrial site soil using Fe2+ chelated with sodium citrate activated persulfate oxidation (PS/Fe2+/SC) was investigated. The study found that the maximum removal rates of sigma 16 PAHs in Nanjing site soil (NJS) and Hefei site soil (HFS) were 73.6% and 85.8% after the second-stage oxidation, respectively. However, the efficiency of PAHs degradation did not increase in the later oxidation stages due to the presence of high crystalline Fe mineral phases in both NJS and HFS, which hindered the Fe2+/Fe3+ recycle and inhibited the production of reactive oxygen species during the remediation process.
