Pollen richness: a reflection of vegetation diversity or pollen-specific parameters?

Summary: Our study aims to explore the drivers of pollen richness using a pollen-vegetation modelling approach. Results indicate that factors such as plant richness, land-cover characteristics, and pollen-related parameters have a significant impact on modelled pollen richness. Plant richness based on pollen types is the primary determinant, but pollen productivity becomes important at higher levels of plant richness. Our modelling approach provides insights into the common factors and their connection to plant diversity in determining pollen richness, as well as a theoretical basis for understanding variation among earlier empirical studies on pollen-plant richness.

Modern Pollen Rain in the Tibetan Plateau

Pollen and plant diversity relationships in a Mediterranean montane area

Summary: Research shows a significant relationship between pollen diversity and the diversity of plant taxa in the surrounding vegetation in a mountainous area of the Western Mediterranean region. Exclusion of trees and standardization of sample size yield the strongest richness relationships, while three turnover metrics produce similar results emphasizing different components of beta diversity. Fossil pollen has potential as a rich source of information on past biodiversity in the Mediterranean region.
