Corrosion of Molybdenum-Based and Ni-Mo Alloys in Liquid Bismuth-Lithium Alloy

Aleksander V. Abramov et al.

Summary: Bismuth-lithium alloys are potential materials for reductive extraction in the reprocessing of molten salt reactor fuel. This study examined the corrosion behavior of molybdenum-based alloys and Hastelloy B-3 alloy in a liquid Bi-Li (5 mol.%) alloy at 650 degrees C. The corrosion rates were determined and the microstructure and chemical composition of the materials and corrosion products were analyzed. The results showed that TZM molybdenum-based alloy corroded due to the formation of a zirconium-bismuth intermetallic compound, while Hastelloy B-3 alloy experienced severe corrosion due to the dissolution of nickel in liquid bismuth.

Toward controllable and predictable synthesis of high- entropy alloy nanocrystals

Yi-Hong Liu et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloy (HEA) nanocrystals, specifically quinary HEA nanocrystals made of platinum-group metals, can be synthesized in a controllable and predictable manner by understanding the reduction kinetics of metal precursors and entropy of mixing. The time it takes for each precursor to reach a steady state plays a critical role in determining the structures of HEA nanocrystals. Dendritic HEA nanocrystals with a defect-rich surface exhibit enhanced catalytic activity and durability, making them a promising candidate for hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions.

Phase evolution in thermally annealed Ni/Bi multilayers studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Bidyadhar Das et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) to track changes in the local bonding environment in NiBi3 and NiBi systems. The decomposition of NiBi3 into NiO and Bi during thermal annealing was successfully tracked through changes in structural and magnetization behavior, which correlated well with the findings from XAS. The study also revealed that NiO becomes the dominant phase at 500 degrees C annealing temperature, as confirmed by magnetic hysteresis measurements and XAS.

Low-temperature liquid platinum catalyst

Md Arifur Rahim et al.

Summary: Understanding the interactions between metal and matrix in metal-matrix catalytic systems can enhance the catalytic activity of isolated metal atoms. In this study, it was found that a trace amount of platinum dissolved in liquid gallium can drive catalytic reactions with enhanced kinetics at low temperature. Molecular simulations showed that the platinum atoms remained unchanged in the gallium matrix and activated the surrounding gallium atoms for catalysis. The liquid catalyst system exhibited significantly higher activity compared to existing solid platinum catalysts, setting a foundation for future exploration of high-throughput catalysis.

Gradient cell-structured high-entropy alloy with exceptional strength and ductility

Qingsong Pan et al.

Summary: By introducing gradient nanoscaled dislocation cell structures in stable single-phase HEAs, enhanced strength can be achieved without apparent loss of ductility. The gradient structure induces the formation of high-density tiny stacking faults and twins, contributing to improved plasticity, increased strength, and work hardening.
