Re-examining the utility and validity of benign ethnic neutropenia: A narrative literature review

Ashley Andreou et al.

Summary: A narrative literature review was conducted to explore racial differences in white blood cells (WBCs) and the diagnosis of benign ethnic neutropenia (BEN). The review identified flawed notions of biological differences between racial groups, unclear definitions of racial group membership, and a lack of consideration for historical and structural factors that may contribute to racial differences in immune status. The findings suggest that BEN as a diagnosis lacks construct validity and reinforces false notions of biological race.

Racial, Economic, and Health Inequality and COVID-19 Infection in the United States

Vida Abedi et al.

Summary: This study reveals that there are racial, economic, and health disparities in the population infected by and dying from COVID-19 in the United States. Factors such as diverse demographics, education levels, income levels, poverty rates, and disabilities contribute to the risk of infection and mortality. Urban areas may have better access to care, whereas higher poverty and disability rates in some counties may result in a lower infection rate but a higher death rate due to comorbidities and limited healthcare access.
