Association of negative symptoms with cognitive impairment in Chinese Han patients with chronic schizophrenia

Rongrong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with chronic schizophrenia exhibit cognitive deficits compared with healthy individuals, except for the visuospatial/constructional domain. Cognitive impairment in patients is associated with age, negative symptoms, age of onset, and antipsychotic dose. There is a significant negative association between cognitive deficits and negative symptoms in patients with chronic schizophrenia. The results of this study need to be confirmed in future studies with longitudinal designs with a large and sex-balanced sample in first-episode drug naive patients with schizophrenia.

Cognitive Predictors of Social and Occupational Functioning in Early Psychosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Data

Megan Cowman et al.

Summary: Research has shown that in individuals with early psychosis, cognitive ability and social cognition are strongly related to psychosocial function, even after accounting for the effects of symptom severity, duration of untreated psychosis, and length of illness. Overall, general cognitive ability and social cognition are most strongly associated with both concurrent and long-term function, with associations demonstrating medium effect sizes.

Effectiveness, Core Elements, and Moderators of Response of Cognitive Remediation for Schizophrenia A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

Antonio Vita et al.

Summary: The study found that cognitive remediation is effective for cognitive and functional outcomes in schizophrenia, with crucial components including trained therapist, structured cognitive strategies, and integration with psychosocial rehabilitation. Patients with fewer years of education, lower premorbid IQ, and higher baseline symptom severity are optimal candidates for cognitive remediation.
