Tunable Intermolecular Charge Transfer in Ionic Liquid Crystalline Derivatives of the [closo-B10H10]2-Anion

Litwin Jacob et al.

Summary: A new paradigm of ionic liquid crystals with low-energy charge transfer bands is demonstrated in this study. By investigating four series of ion pairs, it is found that all ion pairs can form SmA phases and exhibit charge transfer bands in solid, fluid, and solution states. The position of the charge transfer band is correlated with the difference in frontier molecular orbital energies of the ions and the substituent sigma(p) parameters.

Summary: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a promising cancer treatment approach. In the case of osteosarcoma, boron-containing scaffolds can deliver boron to tumor cells and repair bone defects. This study fabricated and characterized biodegradable polymer composites based on aliphatic polyesters containing closo-borates (CB) for BNCT. The mechanical properties, degradation kinetics, and release of closo-borate were investigated. The results confirmed the potential of these composites for BNCT and bone tissue regeneration.
