Experimental Evaluation of the Scale of Fluctuations in Rock Using Ultrasonic Tests

Jian Liu et al.

Summary: The properties of rock vary with spatial location, and spatial variability is a critical source of uncertainty in rock engineering. However, there is a lack of research on the key parameter characterizing spatial variability - the scale of fluctuation. This study proposes a method to evaluate the scale of fluctuation in rocks based on compressive wave velocity and provides valuable insights for reliability evaluations in rock engineering projects.

Stability of complex rock tunnel face under seepage flow conditions using a novel equivalent analytical model

Jianhong Man et al.

Summary: A novel equivalent analytical model is proposed in this paper to address the impact of longitudinally inclined layered rock masses under seepage flow conditions on tunnel face stability. The model directly considers the seepage force as a body force and combines the mirror-image method, layered discretization technique, limit analysis method, and Hoek-Brown yield criterion to derive an analytical expression for stability determination. The main factors affecting tunnel face stability, such as the inclination angle of the flow line, the inclination angle of the rock layer, hydraulic conductivity, rock quality, excavation disturbed zone (EDZ), and the groundwater table height, are analyzed. The calculated diagrams have a certain guiding effect on tunnel construction.

Quantification of the GSI and D values in the Hoek-Brown criterion using the rock quality designation (RQD) and discontinuity surface condition rating (SCR)

Kaizong Xia et al.

Summary: This study focuses on quantitatively determining the parameters in the Hoek-Brown failure criterion to increase the design reliability of rock engineering projects. By establishing quantitative expressions and methods for estimating GSI and D values, an improved H-B failure criterion was developed and successfully tested in the Chengchao Iron Mine in China. The improved method provides a new way to estimate the mechanical parameters of rock masses when test data is insufficient.

Bayesian Estimation for Probability Distribution of Rock's Elastic Modulus Based on Compression Wave Velocity and Deformation Warning for Large Underground Cavern

Jian Liu et al.

Summary: The elastic modulus of rock is a crucial parameter in predicting excavation deformation, designing support, and analyzing the stability of underground engineering. A new method based on Bayesian theory is developed to infer the probability distribution of the rock elastic modulus using the compression wave velocity of rock, overcoming the limitations of traditional statistical methods. The method is validated using test data from the Firuzkoy area of Istanbul and compared with a traditional regression model to demonstrate its advantage under small sample conditions. The method is also applied to obtain the probability distribution of the elastic modulus at the Yingliangbao hydropower station, and safety warning indexes are formulated based on the displacement probability quantile.

Summary: This paper proposes an efficient Bayesian updating approach for excavation responses by considering the uncertainties of soil properties and the calculation model. The use of bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) neural networks improves computational efficiency. The results from an excavation project in Taipei demonstrate the success of the proposed approach in reducing uncertainties and providing accurate predictions of excavation responses.

Bayesian Estimation of Rock Mechanical Parameter and Stability Analysis for a Large Underground Cavern

Quan Jiang et al.

Summary: A Bayesian approach is developed and verified in this paper to estimate the mechanical parameters distribution of rock by integrating limited field data and prior knowledge. The distribution of rock mass parameters is obtained and used to analyze the random field and excavation-induced deformation of a large cavern. The probabilistic characterization of the failure of surrounding rock provides reference for the reliability design of rock support in underground engineering.

Estimating the geological strength index and disturbance factor in the Hoek-Brown criterion using the acoustic wave velocity in the rock mass

Kaizong Xia et al.

Summary: This study develops a method to estimate GSI and D values using acoustic wave velocity, and proposes a new method for determining the mechanical parameters of the rock mass based on these improved values. The analysis results show that the method accurately reflects the factors affecting rock mass quality and disturbance, and its reliability is verified in practical engineering.

Summary: A novel framework combining probabilistic back analyses and predictions is proposed for reliable landslide run-out distance predictions. The method calibrates input parameters probabilistically and then utilizes them for forward predictions, generating exceedance probability curves and hazard zoning maps. The use of surrogate models significantly enhances computational efficiency and the proposed methodology is demonstrated in a case study of two sequential landslides in Gansu Province, China.

Bayesian inference of spatially varying parameters in soil constitutive models by using deformation observation data

Yuan-qin Tao et al.

Summary: This study introduces a data-driven approach to infer the spatially varying parameters of soil constitutive models from limited field observations, improving settlement predictions. The results indicate that site-specific spatial variability can be reasonably estimated and settlement predictions can be enhanced by utilizing the inferred parameter field. Additionally, the selection of important variables, observation spacing, and number of observations all have effects on parameter estimations and settlement predictions.

Correlations between rock mass intactness index (Kv) and other rock mass classification indices (RMR89 system and GSI)

Yanhui Song et al.

Summary: This paper explores the relationship between rock mass integrity, quality, and strength, describing a classification index and scheme for rock mass integrity. The study finds correlations between various indices, suggesting that alternative indices can be used for rock mass quality evaluation in the absence of a specific integrity index. However, further research is needed to validate and supplement the results presented in this study.
