Serum Uric Acid and Diabetes: From Pathophysiology to Cardiovascular Disease

Niki Katsiki et al.

Summary: Hyperuricemia has been associated with nephrolithiasis and gout traditionally, but it is also linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Abnormal lipid and glucose metabolism may be related to elevated serum uric acid levels. Various antidiabetic drugs can affect uric acid concentrations.

Uric acid and cardiovascular disease: A clinical review

Yuichi Saito et al.

Summary: Uric acid, the end-product of purine metabolism, is not only a cause of gout, but also may play roles in developing cardiovascular diseases. Although the causal relationship of hyperuricemia to cardiovascular diseases remains controversial, there has been a growing interest in uric acid due to the increased prevalence of hyperuricemia worldwide. This review article summarizes current evidence concerning the relation between hyperuricemia and cardiovascular diseases.

Gout as a risk factor for acute myocardial infarction: evidence from competing risk model analysis

Chia-Luen Huang et al.

Summary: Patients with gout have an increased risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), especially in those without hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or hyperlipidemia. The risk of AMI associated with gout depends on patients' cardiovascular risk profile and further research is needed to confirm these findings.
