Corrected formula for rectangular area ratio (RAR), a parameter used to quantify airflow limitation on expiratory flow-volume curves

Sumedh S. Hoskote

Summary: This study reveals that the formula used in the original research to calculate the rectangular area ratio (RAR) is inaccurate and presents a correct formula. The implications of this study extend to the validity of data in the original paper and other studies using the same formula.

Dynamic airway function during exercise in COPD assessed via impulse oscillometry before and after inhaled bronchodilators

Nicholas B. Tiller et al.

Summary: This study utilized impulse oscillometry (IOS) to assess dynamic changes in airway function during exercise in COPD patients before and after inhaled bronchodilators. Strong correlations were found among IOS variables, dynamic hyperinflation, and changes in the shape of the expiratory flow-volume curve. Exercise-induced increases in airway resistance and decreases in reactance in COPD patients were ameliorated by inhaled bronchodilators.
