Generational Differences in Nurses' Intention to Leave

Summary: Research has shown differences in nurses' intention to leave and reasons for leaving among different generations. While there are generational differences, workload and staffing issues were common reasons across all generations, suggesting certain interventions may be applicable regardless of age group.

Occupational fatigue, workload and nursing teamwork in hospital nurses

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between workload, nursing teamwork, and nurse fatigue, as well as the moderating effect of nursing teamwork on the relationship between workload and fatigue. The findings showed that greater nursing teamwork was significantly associated with lower acute and chronic fatigue. The relationships between workload and chronic fatigue were stronger when nursing teamwork (team orientation, shared mental model, and team leadership) was high. No moderating effects were found with acute fatigue.

Occupational fatigue, individualized nursing care, and quality of nursing care among hospital nurses

Summary: This study examined the relationships among nurse fatigue, individualized nursing care, and nurse-reported quality of care. The findings showed that nurses' acute and chronic fatigue were significantly associated with decreased perceptions of individualized nursing activities provided to patients on their last shifts. Nurses with higher levels of fatigue and perceived lack of individualized care were less likely to assess their quality of care as excellent. Therefore, addressing nurse fatigue may contribute to promoting individualized nursing care and improving patients' quality of care.

Summary: The integrative review of nurses' experiences of voluntary error reporting (VER) revealed less than ideal experiences due to a variety of influencing factors. These factors included nurses' attitudes, emotions, and practices, as well as the level of support from institutions and organizations. To improve nurses' recognition and contribution towards VER, there is a need to strengthen institutional efforts and promote positive experiences for nurses through establishing a just and open patient safety culture.

The association between self-reported workload and perceptions of patient safety culture: A study of intensive care unit nurses

Summary: The study aimed to examine the association between workload and patient safety culture among ICU nurses. The results showed that ICU nurses had high positive perceptions in various PSC subscales but considered the overall grade on patient safety as poor. There was a significant negative association between overall workload and PSC perceptions of ICU nurses, highlighting the importance of addressing workload issues to enhance patient safety in clinical practice.

Is Hospital Nurse Staffing Legislation in the Public's Interest? An Observational Study in New York State

Summary: The Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act in New York state assembly aims to ensure hospitals have enough nurses for patient care. Research on 116 acute care hospitals in NY found that higher patient-to-nurse ratios were associated with increased in-hospital mortality, longer lengths of stay, and higher 30-day readmission rates. If hospitals were staffed at the proposed 4:1 ratio, an estimated 4370 lives saved and $720 million saved over 2 years.
