Hexavalent Chromium Disrupts Oocyte Development in Rats by Elevating Oxidative Stress, DNA Double-Strand Breaks, Microtubule Disruption, and Aberrant Segregation of Chromosomes

Liga Wuri et al.

Summary: Environmental and occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), leads to female reproductive failures and infertility. Cr(VI) is widely used and has detrimental effects on both male and female reproductive systems. The current study investigates the mechanism of Cr(VI) in causing meiotic disruption of MII oocytes, leading to oocyte incompetence in superovulated rats.

A review of chromium (Cr) epigenetic toxicity and health hazards

Mahalaxmi Iyer et al.

Summary: Carcinogenic metals, particularly chromium (Cr) and its derivatives, including Cr(VI)-induced, have widespread distribution and pose a concern for adverse environmental and human health effects. They cause DNA epigenetic alterations resulting in heritable changes in gene expression. This review discusses the role of Cr(VI) in epigenetic changes, highlighting the importance of considering epigenetics as a possible mechanism underlying Cr(VI) toxicity and cell-transforming ability. More clinical and preventative measures are needed to better understand the toxicity and safeguard employees against cancer.

Inhibition of Sirtuin-1 hyperacetylates p53 and abrogates Sirtuin-1-p53 interaction in Cr(VI)-induced apoptosis in the ovary

Kirthiram K. Sivakumar et al.

Summary: This study reveals a novel mechanism for hexavalent chromium-induced apoptosis in the ovary, mediated through the p53-SIRT1 network. The findings suggest that targeting the p53 pathway may be an ideal approach to rescue ovaries from hexavalent chromium-induced apoptosis.

BPA's transgenerational disturbance to transcription of ovarian steroidogenic genes in rare minnow Gobiocypris rarus via DNA and histone methylation

Long Zhu et al.

Summary: The research found that parental exposure to BPA negatively affects offspring ovarian development by reducing the number of mature oocytes and affecting the expression of steroidogenic genes. However, the adverse effects of parental BPA exposure on offspring are reversible.

Epigenetic Deregulation of Apoptosis in Cancers

Ezgi Ozyerli-Goknar et al.

Summary: The disruption of the balance between cell division and apoptosis is a critical factor in cancer formation and progression. Cancer cells evade apoptosis through genetic mutations and epigenetic alterations, with the latter potentially being a more favorable approach. Epigenetic changes, particularly involving chromatin-modifying enzymes, play a significant role in deregulating apoptotic signaling components in cancer cells and can be targeted for anti-cancer therapy.
