Design and Fabrication of Solar Dryer System for Food Preservation of Vegetables or Fruit

Ankit Kumar et al.

Summary: Food preservation is a long-standing practice with various techniques such as drying, freezing, and pickling. Food spoilage is caused by microorganisms and enzymes in the food. Drying is an effective method for reducing humidity. A mathematical model for solar dryer design was developed in this study.

Simulation of mixed-mode solar dryer with vertical air distribution channel

Senay Teshome Sileshi et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the flow behavior of drying air and its impact on product quality, finding that conventional dryers have non-uniform air flow. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used to analyze transient flow behavior, and the results were in reasonable agreement with experiments. The use of a vertical air distribution channel improved the uniformity of drying air, enhancing the drying process.

Numerical and experimental analysis of heat and mass transfer in the drying process of the solar drying system

Mehmet Das et al.

Summary: Designing a solar food drying system is crucial for performance, with the use of air-heated solar collectors becoming more common. Modelling dryer room temperature and pressure distribution is essential for system design. Numerical analysis was conducted on drying air speed, temperature, and product moisture content values, using polynomial equations and COMSOL Multiphysics program for modelling.

Thermo-hydraulic performance of a solar air heater with staggered C-shape finned absorber plate

A. Saravanan et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation focused on the thermo-hydraulic performance of a solar air heater with staggered multiple C-shape perforated and non-perforated finned absorber plate. Results indicated that the perforated finned absorber plate outperformed the smooth plate absorber plate, especially with relative pitch to gap ratio 3.8 and relative height ratio 0.6.

Drying characteristics, energetic and exergetic investigation during mixed-mode solar drying of pineapple slices at varied air mass flow rates

Poonam Rani et al.

Summary: This study focused on evaluating the energy and exergy flow in a mixed-mode solar dryer during the drying of pineapple slices using the first and second laws of thermodynamics. Results showed that increasing air mass flow rate could enhance the useful heat gain by air, reduce thermal losses from the collector, and improve efficiency, leading to better drying performance.

Optimization of process parameters and numerical modeling of heat and mass transfer during simulated solar drying of paddy

Aprajeeta Jha et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to optimize the process parameters for solar drying of paddy and developed a 3-dimensional, multi-layered finite element model for predicting moisture and temperature profile. The optimized parameters for drying paddy were found to be 700 W, 3.5 m/s, and 12% moisture content, resulting in optimal temperature, milling yield, and drying time. The developed model successfully accounted for the diffusion coefficients of endosperm, bran, and husk layers to standardize the hybrid solar drying process.

Summary: This study developed a finite element model using COMSOL Multiphysics software to predict the temperature and moisture ratio of potato cylinders during solar drying. The reliability of the FE model predicted results was validated through an artificial neural network model, demonstrating superior performance. The study concluded that the FE model showed better prediction capability compared to the ANN model.

Flow uniformity assessment in a multi-chamber cabinet of a hybrid solar dryer

Hussain H. Al-Kayiem et al.

Summary: This study investigated a hybrid solar-thermal dryer with a multi-chamber drying cabinet using experimental and computational analysis, and found that the best drying uniformity was achieved with a tray inclination angle of 30 degrees. Statistical analysis revealed that around 93% of velocity frequency is obtained at 0.7-0.8 m/s air velocity level for 30 degrees tray angle.
