Assessing the WRF-Solar Model Performance Using Satellite-Derived Irradiance from the National Solar Radiation Database

Pedro A. Jimenez et al.

Summary: WRF-Solar is a numerical weather prediction model specifically designed for accurate solar irradiance forecasting. This study analyzes the adequacy of the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) to validate and improve the performance of WRF-Solar. The study also examines the forecast errors, sensitivity to grid spacing and radiative effects of unresolved clouds in WRF-Solar. Results show that GHI retrievals have the potential to contribute to increasing the performance of WRF-Solar.

Evaluation of MERRA-2 hourly surface solar radiation across China

Yunfei Du et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of MERRA-2's global horizontal irradiance (GHI) in China by comparing it with ground station observations. The results show that MERRA-2 overestimates GHI in all-sky, clear-sky, and cloudy conditions. The underestimation of cloud fraction is identified as the dominant factor causing the overestimation of MERRA-2 GHI.

Assessing the WRF-Solar Model Performance Using Satellite-Derived Irradiance from the National Solar Radiation Database

Pedro A. Jimenez et al.

Summary: WRF-Solar is a numerical weather prediction model designed for accurate solar irradiance forecasting, with flexibility in representing aerosol-cloud-radiation processes. The National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) is sufficient for validating WRF-Solar performance, revealing a systematic overestimation of GHI across the contiguous United States (CONUS).

Exploring the Potential of the Cost-Efficient TAHMO Observation Data for Hydro-Meteorological Applications in Sub-Saharan Africa

Julia Schunke et al.

Summary: This study provides a first analysis of the performance of 10 selected TAHMO stations across Burkina Faso (BF), indicating that TAHMO potentially offers a reliable and cost-efficient solution for hydro-meteorological applications. However, the usage of wind speed measurements is not recommended without bias correction, and the limited measurement period of TAHMO still prevents its usability in climate research. More evaluation studies of TAHMO are needed considering different environmental and climate conditions across sub-Saharan Africa.

Mathematical Determination of the Upper and Lower Limits of the Diffuse Fraction at Any Site

Harry D. Kambezidis et al.

Summary: A mathematical method for determining upper and lower diffuse-fraction limits that divide the sky into clear, intermediate, and overcast categories was developed and demonstrated using 14 global sites. The study found that sunshine duration decreases with increasing diffuse-fraction values, with variations in the number of sunshine duration values in each sky-condition classification based on local climatology.
