Assessment of substrate load and process pH for bioethanol production - Development of a kinetic model

Panagiota Tsafrakidou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of initial substrate concentration and pH values on bioethanol production from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and developed an innovative kinetic model to fit the experimental data. The results showed that both yeast growth and bioethanol production were not substantially affected by the pH values tested in this study.

Effect of two-phase olive pomace acidification on odor prevention and kernel oil acidity reduction as a function of storage duration

G. Manthos et al.

Summary: The adoption of two-phase olive oil extraction processes has led to a significant increase in the production of two-phase olive pomace each year. During storage, malodorous compounds are formed, diminishing the quality of kernel oil. Acidification can prevent the production of 4-ethylphenol and maintain kernel oil acidity at a lower level.

Expired food products and used disposable adult nappies mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion: Biochemical methane potential, feedstock pretreatment and two-stage system performance

Konstantina Tsigkou et al.

Summary: Used absorbent hygiene products and food waste disposed of in landfills have significant environmental impacts. The study suggests co-digesting the biodegradable part of used disposable adult nappies with expired food products to recover energy, with different pretreatment schemes affecting the energy recovery efficiency.

Systematic cost evaluations of biological and thermochemical processes for ethanol production from biomass residues and industrial off-gases

Abdul M. Petersen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated different process technologies for bioethanol production and their costs, with 1G ethanol from A-molasses being the most cost-effective option. Energy self-sufficiency for 3G ethanol reduced production costs but also decreased ethanol yields.

From waste to sustainable industry: How can agro-industrial wastes help in the development of new products?

Lucas Cantao Freitas et al.

Summary: The demand for food production has led to an increase in agricultural industrial waste generation, making it a key strategy for sustainable industrial development. New environmentally friendly technologies have been studied and applied to obtain high value-added products and promote the production of biomass energy and new biomaterials.
