Study on prevention and control measures of sandstone geothermal reinjection plugging

Xiangtao Wang et al.

Summary: The problem of plugging in the process of geothermal tailwater reinjection of sandstone has been a serious obstacle to its continuous development for many years. The plugging problems are complex and vary, including physical plugging, chemical plugging, microbial plugging, and gas plugging. This paper proposes corresponding blocking prevention measures based on the mechanism characteristics of each type of plugging, and solves the current plugging problems through filtration, scale inhibitor addition, intermittent reinjection, chlorine dioxide addition, and regular lifting. In addition, a complete set of reinjection processes is designed to ensure the efficient reinjection of sandstone geothermal tailwater.

Gleaning insights from German energy transition and large-scale underground energy storage for China's carbon neutrality

Yachen Xie et al.

Summary: The global energy transition necessitates international exchange of experiences for mutual learning. Germany's success in its initial phase of energy transition can be attributed to its adoption of smart energy technology and implementation of electricity futures and spot marketization. China's distinct approach is needed due to its significantly higher annual electricity consumption, and we recommend a clean energy system based on smart sector coupling (ENSYSCO) to achieve sustainable energy. However, renewable energy storage remains a significant challenge, and we propose four large-scale underground energy storage methods based on ENSYSCO to address this challenge while considering China's national conditions. These proposals have led to pilot projects for large-scale underground energy storage in China, which we believe is necessary for achieving carbon neutrality and efficient grid integration of renewable energy within the ENSYSCO framework.

Mitigation of groundwater iron-induced clogging by low-cost bioadsorbent in open loop geothermal heat pump systems

Claudia Fujita et al.

Summary: Green energy production from natural resources, such as groundwater geothermal energy (GGE), can help reduce emissions from fossil fuels. However, open-loop geothermal heat pump systems (OLGHPS) face clogging issues due to the chemistry of iron species. This study tested three filtering materials and found that wooden charcoal (biomaterial) had the highest iron removal capacity, making it a potential eco-friendly solution for OLGHPS.

A regenerative Enhanced Geothermal System for heat and electricity production as well as energy storage

Muhammad Haris et al.

Summary: This study proposed an innovative concept of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) that integrates heat and electricity production with the storage of surplus renewable energy. Numerical simulations and coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) modeling were performed to investigate the evolution of fluid and heat transmissivity and optimize thermal production. The results showed a decrease in electric potential and the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), indicating the economic feasibility of the proposed EGS, and suggested several schemes for energy storage to extend the life of geothermal power plants.

Can ultrafiltration singly treat the iron- and manganese-containing groundwater?

Xiaobin Tang et al.

Summary: The study showed that a pilot-scale gravity-driven membrane process can efficiently remove Fe2+ and Mn2+, with observed flux stabilization. Pre-adding manganese oxides can shorten the manganese removal ripening period, while also contributing to Mn2+ removal and flux improvements. The presence of Mn2+ facilitated the formation of biocake layer structures, influencing the flux stabilization of GDM.

A thermo-hydro-chemical model with porosity reduction and enthalpy production: Application to silica precipitation in geothermal reservoirs

Batoul M. Gisler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of porosity reduction caused by silica precipitation on pore pressure development, heat transfer, and reactive flow in a geothermal system. The findings suggest that porosity reduction can lead to excess pore pressure, affecting rock mass stability and the likelihood of tensile failure. Consequently, considering the effective stresses associated with solute deposition is crucial for accurate studies of rock failure and has important implications for the long-term thermo-hydraulic properties of geothermal reservoirs.

Evaluation of iron and manganese removal effectiveness by treatment plant modules based on water pollution index; a comprehensive approach

Nima Kalvani et al.

Summary: Groundwater is a viable alternative when access to surface water resources is limited, and research on the best module for removing manganese and iron in the water treatment plant in Mazandaran was conducted. Factors such as water quality, seasonal temperature, and backwashing were analyzed, with results showing that the module using open-aeration and chlorine as oxidations was most effective.

Influence of Temperature and Sulfate Concentration on the Sulfate/Sulfite Reduction Prokaryotic Communities in the Tibetan Hot Springs

Li Ma et al.

Summary: The distribution and diversity of sulfate/sulfite reduction prokaryotic communities in hot springs from the Quzhuomu and Daggyai Geothermal Zone of Tibetan, China, were reported for the first time. The study found that the SRP populations were diverse and correlated with environmental factors. Temperature played a significant role in affecting the distribution and diversity of the dsrB gene in these geothermal areas.
