Thermal management and temperature uniformity enhancement of cylindrical lithium-ion battery pack based on liquid cooling equipped with twisted tapes

Zeinab Esmaeili et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of using twisted tapes in a cooling system for battery thermal management is confirmed. A maximum battery temperature of around 305K can be achieved by having seven twist pitches, but increasing this parameter by more than five does not result noticeable performance changes. The cooling system with nonuniform twisted tapes outperforms the conventional case, with a temperature difference in the battery module stabilized within 11.25K using a twisted tape with an intensified ratio of 1.5.

A parametric study of a hybrid battery thermal management system that couples PCM with wavy microchannel cold plate

Yonghao Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, an innovative system called hybrid wavy microchannel cold plate (HWMCP) using PCM and wavy microchannel cold plate (WMCP) is designed and analyzed. The heat storage capacity of HWMCP increases with the increase of PCM thickness and height ratio h1/h2. The cooling capacity of HWMCP is slightly improved when the liquid microchannels grow in number. Compared with unidirectional flow, cross flow significantly reduces the maximum temperature of the battery and improves the utilization rate of PCM.

Summary: Battery aging significantly affects the thermal characteristics and electrochemical performance of electric vehicle batteries. This research develops a realistic and generic model for the design of battery thermal management systems (BTMS) to ensure efficient and durable operation of batteries. The study shows that BTMS provides effective cooling to batteries in their initial working cycles but fails to control the battery temperature after aging. Furthermore, BTMS with Y direction mini-channels provides more effective cooling and achieves good electrochemical performance.

Experimental investigation on flow boiling instability of R1233zd(E) in a parallel mini-channel heat sink for the application of battery thermal management

Dan Xu et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the flow boiling instability of R1233zd(E) in a 21 parallel mini-channel heat sink designed for battery thermal management. Experimental results showed that the period and initial position of reverse flow decreased as heat flux increased, and four typical reverse flow patterns were observed. The Parallel Channel Instability (PCI) featuring large inlet pressure oscillation was suppressed with increased inlet subcooling, while mass flux had limited influence on PCI suppression. Flow instability maps were established based on heat flux, mass flux, and dimensionless parameters, allowing for the categorization of stable, transition, and unstable regions.

Degradation characteristics investigation for lithium-ion cells with NCA cathode during overcharging

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper explores the degradation characteristics of lithium-ion battery cells with NCA electrode during cyclic overcharging and proposes non-destructive methods to detect overcharging degradation failure. Experimental results show that battery capacity drops significantly with increasing overcharge depth and number of cycles, especially during the first three cycles and when the charging termination voltage is set to 5V. At the same time, the cell's overcharge tolerance decreases with cyclic overcharging. The combination of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, incremental capacity analysis, and differential voltage analysis is used to diagnose cell degradation. Three main degradation modes are identified and quantified by analyzing characteristic parameters such as internal resistance and changes in peak, valley, and curve position of incremental capacity curves. It is concluded that loss of lithium inventory and loss of active materials are the dominant degradation modes during cyclic overcharging. Additionally, the sharp increase of the third peak on incremental capacity curves is identified as a unique feature of overcharging degradation, which can be used to diagnose cyclic overcharging-induced degradation in batteries with NCA cathode.
