Quantifying the dualistic nature of urban heat Island effect (UHI) on building energy consumption

Summary: Urban heat island (UHI) has a significant impact on building energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions globally. The nature and extent of these effects, however, depend on the year-round climatic conditions at specific locations. This study conducted building energy simulations for 43 locations in the United States (U.S.) and found that the energy impacts of UHI are strongly correlated with degree days, absolute humidity, and solar radiation. A multiple regression model was developed to predict the energy impacts of UHI based on climatic context, providing insights for prioritizing UHI mitigation policies according to location and climate.

Anthropogenic heating of the urban environment: An investigation of feedback dynamics between urban micro-climate and decomposed anthropogenic heating from buildings

Summary: This study assesses the implications of anthropogenic heating for urban micro-climate dynamics using building energy modeling and a high-resolution urban micro-climate modeling framework. The findings show that anthropogenic heating from building exhaust has a more significant impact on local air temperature during the night, compared to anthropogenic heating from HVAC systems. Moreover, the two components of anthropogenic heating exhibit offsetting behaviors under increasing outdoor temperatures. A detailed understanding of the composition of anthropogenic heating specific to an urban environment is necessary to predict its diurnal dynamics and response to a warming climate.

By quantitatively and qualitatively measuring the vulnerability of the UHI effect using the urban thermal field variation index (UTFVI), the study identifies changes in land use and cover dynamics and highlights the negative correlation between land surface temperature and vegetation index.

Assessing the Spatial Mapping of Heat Vulnerability under Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area

Summary: The study examines the urban heat island and vulnerability to heatwaves in Dhaka by using a heat vulnerability index (HVI). The results show that the city has a high proportion of built-up areas and low vegetation cover and water bodies. The HVI analysis reveals that there are high-risk zones and low-risk zones in different thanas, with exposure and sensitivity having a positive correlation and adaptive capacity having a negative correlation with the HVI. The findings can be utilized for mitigating the urban heat island phenomenon and maintaining thermal comfort in Dhaka.

This study introduces a new flexible data schema that can be used for data exchange between urban building energy models and urban microclimate models. Results using a district of 97 buildings in San Francisco show that considering the interactions between the two models during a two-day heatwave event leads to increased peak building facade temperature, air node temperature, and cooling energy use compared to simulation results using historical weather data.
