Triggering Xylitol crystallization in a 42 kWhth shell and tubes latent heat thermal energy storage system

Louis Piquard et al.

Summary: This study first investigates the feasibility of using xylitol as phase change material in a 42 kWhth shell and tubes latent heat thermal energy storage prototype, which integrates a bubbling and seeding system to trigger xylitol crystallization. Then, the benefits of optimizing the seeding step are discussed, which can completely eliminate the effects of xylitol supercooling on the restored temperature levels. The effect of bubbling on temperature homogenization in latent heat thermal energy storage is also analyzed.

Life-Cycle Assessment of phase-change materials in buildings: A review

Karel Struhala et al.

Summary: The contemporary construction industry is a major energy consumer and polluter, and there is a need to transition to more efficient energy sources. Unstable energy supply from renewables creates the need for energy storage systems, and phase-change materials (PCMs) are proposed as a solution. However, research in this field focuses more on energy and cost efficiency rather than analyzing the environmental impacts of PCMs.

A review of the innovative application of phase change materials to cold-chain logistics for agricultural product storage

Le Zhao et al.

Summary: The agricultural cold-chain logistics system plays a significant role in preserving agricultural products and promoting rural revitalization in China. However, the low performance of energy-storage materials and lack of integration methods have led to product spoilage during transportation. Future trends involve the development of high-performance and low-carbon energy-storage materials to meet environmental standards and market demands, accelerating the industrialization of the system.

Experimental Feasibility Study of a Direct Contact Latent Heat Storage Using an Ester as a Bio-Based Storage Material

Lukas Hegner et al.

Summary: The use of direct contact latent heat storage (DC-LHS) with esters as phase change material (PCM) offers promising compact storage technology with high performance in terms of heat transfer and sustainability. By allowing the heat transfer fluid to flow directly through the PCM, it creates a large heat exchange surface area, reducing the environmental impact and enabling high energy densities.
