Contemporary outcomes of anemia in US patients with chronic kidney disease

Eric T. Wittbrodt et al.

Summary: This study characterized patients with NDD-CKD and anemia using real-world data from the USA, finding that patients with anemia had higher risks of adverse clinical outcomes but were rarely treated with ESAs and intravenous iron. There are opportunities for improved anemia management in patients with NDD-CKD.

Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia in CKD and End-Stage Kidney Disease

Orlando M. Gutierrez

Summary: Iron deficiency is common in individuals with chronic kidney disease and can lead to the development of anemia. Oral iron agents may not be effective, and consideration should be given to using intravenous formulations. Recent studies suggest that more aggressive repletion of iron may provide benefits for anemia management and severe clinical outcomes such as cardiovascular disease.

Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease: From Pathophysiology and Current Treatments, to Future Agents

Jose Portoles et al.

Summary: Anemia is a common complication in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is managed with iron supplements and erythropoiesis stimulating agents. Advances in treatment, such as the development of hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs) and insights from recent clinical trials on iron supplementation, may change future treatment targets.

A simplified diagnostic pathway for the differential diagnosis of iron deficiency anaemia and anaemia of chronic disease

Nicola Svenson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of using hepcidin in conjunction with reticulocyte haemoglobin equivalent (RetHe) to differentiate between iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and anaemia of chronic disease (ACD), as well as exclude IDA in patients with mixed aetiology. The results showed that hepcidin, along with RetHe, offers a new simplified diagnostic pathway for differential diagnosis of IDA and ACD, reducing the diagnostic turnaround time and allowing appropriate treatment of patients with true iron deficiency.

Controversies in optimal anemia management: conclusions from a Kidney Disease: Improving (KDIGO) Conference

Jodie L. Babitt et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is often associated with anemia and disordered iron homeostasis, which have significant adverse consequences. In 2012, KDIGO issued guidelines for managing anemia in chronic kidney disease, and in 2019, they convened conferences to review new evidence and controversies related to iron and anemia treatment. The first conference focused on iron-related issues like diagnostic challenges, treatment options and patient outcomes.
