Retrieving the Infected Area of Pine Wilt Disease-Disturbed Pine Forests from Medium-Resolution Satellite Images Using the Stochastic Radiative Transfer Theory

Xiaoyao Li et al.

Summary: Pine wilt disease is a global threat to forests, and it is crucial for forest managers to detect infected areas in a large region. This study proposes an approach using medium-resolution satellite images to detect infected areas based on simulations of a stochastic radiative transfer model. The results show that the model performs well in simulating the disease in three-dimensional models but has lower accuracy in real forest samples.

Mapping thins to identify active forest management in southern pine plantations using Landsat time series stacks

V. A. Thomas et al.

Summary: The study aims to use Landsat data to detect forest thins as an indicator of active forest management. A machine learning approach was successfully developed to identify thinned areas, with high accuracy in separating thins from clear cuts and non-harvested pines. Important predictors in the classifiers included variables related to vegetation phenology, stand-replacing disturbance, and high spatial resolution visible reflectance.

Hybrid inversion of radiative transfer models based on high spatial resolution satellite reflectance data improves fractional vegetation cover retrieval in heterogeneous ecological systems after fire

Jose Manuel Fernandez-Guisuraga et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of estimating FVC from high spatial resolution satellite reflectance data compared to coarser imagery in landscapes affected by a megafire in the western Mediterranean Basin. The accuracy of FVC retrieval was found to be substantially higher from WorldView-3 than from Sentinel-2, with oak forests showing more accurate retrieval compared to heathlands and broomlands. The findings highlight the effectiveness of high spatial resolution satellite data in capturing FVC ground spatial variability using a hybrid RTM retrieval method in heterogeneous burned areas.

Completing the machine learning saga in fractional snow cover estimation from MODIS Terra reflectance data: Random forests versus support vector regression

Semih Kuter

Summary: This study investigates the suitability of two frequently employed machine learning algorithms, random forests (RFs) and support vector regression (SVR), for fractional snow cover (FSC) estimation from MODIS Terra data, comparing them with previously proposed artificial neural networks (ANNs) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) methods over complex alpine terrain. The results indicate high consistency of the RF, SVR, ANN, and MARS models with reference FSC values, showing low RMSE and high R values. Additionally, the models trained without three auxiliary variables show slight differences but still perform well in solving complex functional dependencies using only MODIS reflectance data.

Field-scale crop yield prediction using multi-temporal WorldView-3 and PlanetScope satellite data and deep learning

Vasit Sagan et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed a deep learning approach based on raw satellite imagery for field-scale yield prediction, demonstrating that deep learning can predict yield directly and explain nearly 90% variance. The use of WV-3 imagery with RedEdge and SWIR bands outperformed multi-temporal PS data for yield prediction.

Discriminating Xylella fastidiosa from Verticillium dahliae infections in olive trees using thermal- and hyperspectral-based plant traits

T. Poblete et al.

Summary: A three-stage machine learning algorithm was proposed to distinguish Vd infections from Xf infections, using datasets from 27 olive orchards affected by Xf and Vd outbreaks in Italy and Spain between 2011 and 2017. Plant traits derived from airborne hyperspectral and thermal imagery successfully discriminated Xf from Vd infections. The method generated false-positive rates of 9% for Vd infections and 4% for Xf infections, with overall accuracies of 98% and 92%, respectively.

Comparison of gap-filling techniques applied to the CCI soil moisture database in Southern Europe

Laura Almendra-Martin et al.

Summary: Soil moisture is a key variable in land-atmosphere interactions, and continuous monitoring is essential for understanding the impact of climate change. Different gap-filling techniques were evaluated on satellite-based soil moisture data, with SVM method showing the best performance. Past soil moisture information, particularly from the previous day, is crucial for accurate predictions.

Divergent abiotic spectral pathways unravel pathogen stress signals across species

P. J. Zarco-Tejada et al.

Summary: Plant pathogens, such as Xylella fastidiosa, are increasingly threatening global food security, causing significant yield losses. Spectral screening methods are crucial for early detection of non-visual symptoms of infection and prevention of spread. Using airborne spectroscopy, researchers have identified host-specific spectral pathways that can distinguish biotic-induced symptoms, improving detection accuracy and reducing crop losses worldwide.
