Rui Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, a global seamless and high-resolution temperature dataset (GSHTD) for land surface temperature (Ts) and near-surface air temperature (Ta) from 2001 to 2020 was developed. The dataset includes seven types of temperature data and has global coverage and high spatial resolution. GSHTD has no missing values and shows high accuracy compared to other temperature reconstruction methods.

Quantifying the response of surface urban heat island to urbanization using the annual temperature cycle model

Huidong Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a framework to quantify the response of surface urban heat island (UHI) to urban expansion, and investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics and underlying mechanisms of UHI in the Jing-jn-ji region of China. The findings reveal that UHI is influenced by urban expansion and seasonal variations of vegetation, and urban greening can mitigate UHI in central urban areas during summer daytime.

Spatial patterns and temporal variations of footprint and intensity of surface urban heat island in 141 China cities

Jia Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the footprint and intensity of urban heat island (UHI) in 141 cities in China from 2003 to 2020. The results showed that the daytime footprint of UHI was larger than the nighttime footprint, particularly in smaller cities where the footprint increased over time while plateaued in larger cities. Additionally, high UHI intensity occurred in cities with warm climate during the daytime but in cities with cold climate during the nighttime. These findings are important for mitigating the UHI effect in cities with different urbanization levels and climatic backgrounds.

Spatial temperature differences in local climate zones of Seoul metropolitan area during a heatwave

Chaeyeon Yi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed spatial temperature differences among urban structural environments with different meteorological elements and radiant fluxes in the energy balance system, using the SOLWEIG model. The results showed that even in areas with artificial structures, the highest and mean radiant temperatures were observed in LCZ 2 and 3, indicating high heat stress in residential areas built 30 to 40 years ago. Improved urban surface management is expected to reduce high heat stress in Seoul by 1-3 degrees Celsius.

Seasonally disparate responses of surface thermal environment to 2D/3D urban morphology

Jike Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal differences in the impacts of 2D and 3D building and tree morphologies on land surface temperature (LST). The results showed that the percent cover of buildings predominantly influenced LST in spring and summer, while the sky view factor had a greater impact in autumn and winter. The study also found that the overall impacts of 2D and 3D building structures on LST were mainly direct, with the indirect impacts originating from tree structures.

Monitoring the Distribution and Variations of City Size Based on Night-Time Light Remote Sensing: A Case Study in the Yangtze River Delta of China

Yuan Ding et al.

Summary: Effectively monitoring city size in real time through nighttime light remote sensing can provide timely and rapid information for urban development planning. A case study in the Yangtze River Delta region in China shows that the variations in city size follow the rank-size rule, indicating the prominence of medium-small cities and a larger dispersed force compared to concentrated force. The use of urban areas extracted from nighttime light remote sensing instead of population data is validated by comparing the computed city size with statistical data, demonstrating the rationality and applicability of this method.

Summary: In this study, a method using error prediction and correction was proposed to improve the estimation of extreme temperatures. The accuracy of the method was compared with a widely used method in previous studies, and the results showed that it reduced the errors in extreme temperature estimation and produced satisfactory estimates of heat and cold wave magnitudes.

GPU parallel computing for mapping urban outdoor heat exposure

Xiaojiang Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized GPU parallel computing to accelerate the computation of SVF maps, which were then used to analyze the spatial distribution of mean radiation temperature (T-mrt) in Philadelphia as an indicator of outdoor heat exposure. Results revealed uneven distribution of outdoor heat exposure in Philadelphia, with higher levels in the eastern and southern parts. Increasing tree canopy cover was identified as an effective measure to reduce heat exposure by providing more shade in the areas where it is most needed.
