A new SMAP soil moisture and vegetation optical depth product (SMAP-IB): Algorithm, assessment and inter-comparison

Summary: Passive microwave remote sensing at L-band provides an unprecedented opportunity to estimate global surface soil moisture and vegetation water content. This study presents a new algorithm (SMAP-IB) to retrieve soil moisture and L-band vegetation optical depth from SMAP radiometric observations. The results suggest that SMAP-IB performs well in capturing the temporal trends of in-situ observations and exhibits good correlation with aboveground biomass and tree height.

Estimation of Global Irrigation Water Use by the Integration of Multiple Satellite Observations

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive framework to estimate global irrigation water use (IWU) by integrating multiple satellite observations. The results show that the integrated IWU estimate outperforms individual satellite observations, but there is a general underestimation of IWU globally. Further efforts are needed to improve the accuracy of global IWU estimation by producing high-quality and finer spatiotemporal resolution satellite-based products.
