Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Surface Water in China from the 1980s to 2015 Based on Remote Sensing Monitoring

Song Song et al.

Summary: Climate change and human interference have significant impacts on water body abundance dynamics, as shown in a study of China over three decades. The expansion of water surface area was observed despite a drier and warmer climate, with new reservoirs being a major contributor and climatic factors driving changes in different regions. Human relocation of water resources played a key role in expanding water surface area in some parts of China. These findings emphasize the importance of integrated water resource management, particularly in water conservation and restoration efforts.

Estimation of global reservoir evaporation losses

Wei Tian et al.

Summary: Estimating global reservoir evaporation losses is crucial for reservoir management, but there is still a gap in estimating at a global scale due to data limitations. Using two new datasets, we successfully estimated the evaporation volume of 7242 large reservoirs worldwide from 1985 to 2016. The results show significant and increasing evaporation losses, with 80% of the increment contributed by middle-income countries.

Artificial and Natural Water Bodies Change in China, 2000-2020

Yong Wang et al.

Summary: Artificial and natural water bodies are important components of water-related ecosystems and indicators of human activities and climate change. However, limited understanding of their changes and lack of data sets restrict effective protection and restoration actions. This study develops data sets for China's water bodies and analyzes their characteristics and causes using satellite remote sensing. The results show an overall increasing trend in the area of water bodies, with spatial distribution differences and smaller fluctuation range for artificial water bodies. This research is critical for understanding China's surface water system and formulating strategies for ecosystem protection and restoration.

Xinxin Wang et al.

Summary: Data and knowledge of surface water bodies are crucial for water resource management and sustainability. This study generated a dataset for large surface water bodies, dams, reservoirs, and lakes in China using satellite imagery. The dataset revealed that large surface water bodies accounted for a significant portion of China's total water area, with most dams and reservoirs concentrated in the south and east, and lakes predominantly found in the west and lower Yangtze River basin.

Remotely sensed reservoir water storage dynamics (1984-2015) and the influence of climate variability and management at a global scale

Jiawei Hou et al.

Summary: Large dam reservoirs have been constructed worldwide to increase water supplies and support economic growth. Using remote sensing technology, the monthly water storage of 6695 reservoirs between 1984 and 2015 was reconstructed. It was found that 23% of reservoirs experienced significant decreases in storage, while 21% experienced increases. These changes were primarily influenced by precipitation and river inflow, highlighting the importance of long-term precipitation changes for reservoir water storage.

Summary: This study accurately examines inland water bodies in China using high-resolution satellite imagery, statistical water resource data, and precipitation data. Results show that from 1980 to 2015, inland water body areas increased, with significant increases in reservoir and pond areas but minimal changes in lake and river areas. Different basins face various water resource utilization and environmental issues, with the Yellow River, Haihe River, and Songhua and Liaohe River Basins experiencing water shortages and pollution.

Monitoring high spatiotemporal water dynamics by fusing MODIS, Landsat, water occurrence data and DEM

Xiaodong Li et al.

Summary: Monitoring surface water dynamics using remote sensing imagery is crucial for understanding global ecosystem and climate change impacts. Current challenges in mapping surface water at fine spatial and temporal resolution have led to the development of the STSWM method, which integrates topographic information to predict 30 m resolution surface water maps. Results show that STSWM outperforms other state-of-the-art spatiotemporal methods in accurately representing spatial details of surface water.

Global carbon budget of reservoirs is overturned by the quantification of drawdown areas

Philipp S. Keller et al.

Summary: Satellite observations show that globally, reservoirs are net emitters of carbon, with drawdown areas contributing to significant CO2 emissions. The exposure of drawdown areas challenges the idea that reservoirs are carbon sinks, as they emit more carbon than they bury. This overturns the conventional understanding of the role of reservoirs in the carbon cycle.

Exploring annual lake dynamics in Xinjiang (China): spatiotemporal features and driving climate factors from 2000 to 2019

Lilin Zheng et al.

Summary: The number and area of lakes in Xinjiang have significantly increased over the past two decades, with the most significant expansion occurring in alpine areas at 3000-5000 meters above sea level. Precipitation directly contributes to lake expansion, while the impacts of recent warming are more complex, particularly in higher altitude regions. Climate warming leading to glacier retreat and increased meltwater from ground ice are important factors driving lake expansion.
