Probabilistic urban cascading multi-hazard risk assessment methodology for ground shaking and post-earthquake fires

Tomoaki Nishino

Summary: A probabilistic methodology is proposed for assessing multi-hazard risk of ground shaking and post-earthquake fires. The methodology integrates various models and factors to evaluate the exceedance probability of regional shaking-fire losses. A realistic case study is conducted to demonstrate the impact of multi-hazard consideration on risk assessments, highlighting the usefulness of the methodology for earthquake risk reduction in urban communities.

The Effect of Safety Barrier Degradation on the Severity of Primary Natech Scenarios*

Alessio Misuri et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel methodology for the quantitative risk assessment of Natech scenarios caused by natural hazards, considering the depletion of safety barrier performance. A multi-level approach is used to assess the performance modification of safety systems, and an innovative procedure is proposed for the quantitative assessment of these scenarios, accounting for depleted barrier performance. A case study demonstrates a significant increase in risk compared to baseline performance, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive assessment for Natech events.

Parallel density scanned adaptive Kriging to improve local tsunami hazard assessment for coastal infrastructures

F. Di Maio et al.

Summary: Seismic Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Assessment (SPTHA) is a framework for calculating the probability of tsunami waves exceeding a specific threshold height. This study innovatively uses Parallel density scanned Adaptive Kriging (P-ds AK) to improve the computational efficiency of local SPTHA. The application in the oil refinery area in Milazzo, Italy, shows a reduction in the number of high-resolution tsunami simulations required.

Modeling NaTech-related domino effects in process clusters: A network-based approach

Meng Lan et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the issue of domino effects in process clusters and proposes a simulation and evaluation tool that considers the uncertainty of primary accidents triggered by natural hazards. It also develops a network-based model to analyze the NaTech-related domino effects. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can be applied to large-scale process clusters and accurately describe the role of each unit at different levels.

Assessment of safety barrier performance in the mitigation of domino scenarios caused by Natech events

Alessio Misuri et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel approach to evaluate the performance modification of safety barriers and protection systems during natural hazards, as well as the resulting change in frequency of secondary technological scenarios. By considering the cascading effects triggered by natural hazards and degradation of safety barrier performance, the study uses layer of protection analysis and event tree analysis to quantify and assess overall escalation scenarios.

Assessment of risk modification due to safety barrier performance degradation in Natech events

Alessio Misuri et al.

Summary: This study developed a comprehensive methodology to quantitatively assess the risk caused by the escalation of Natech accidents, specifically addressing the effect of safety barrier performance modification induced by natural hazards. Barrier performance depletion was modeled through an innovative multi-level approach and introduced in the quantitative risk assessment procedure by a modified event tree analysis. A demonstrative application of the proposed methodology to a case study showed a significant increase in risk figures resulting from the degradation of safety barrier performance caused by natural events.
