Extended sample-based approach for efficient sensitivity analysis of group of random variables

Zhenqiang Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an extended sample-based approach for efficient sensitivity analysis. The original sample-based approach could only estimate sensitivity indices for individual and low-dimensional inputs, making it challenging to estimate sensitivity indices for high-dimensional groups of inputs. The proposed approach converts estimating the sensitivity index for high-dimensional groups of inputs to estimating the sensitivity indices for individual inputs and their lower-order interactions using variance decomposition. Different estimators are proposed to reduce error and improve estimation accuracy. The proposed approach demonstrates good efficiency and accuracy through three benchmark examples.

Risk-informed operation and maintenance of complex lifeline systems using parallelized multi-agent deep Q-network

Dongkyu Lee et al.

Summary: A multiagent deep reinforcement learning framework called parallelized multi-agent deep Q-network (PM-DQN) is proposed to overcome the curse of dimensionality in complex systems. The method divides the system into multiple subsystems, with each agent learning the operation and maintenance policy of the corresponding subsystem. The learning processes occur simultaneously in parallel units, and the trained policies are periodically synchronized to improve the master policy. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms baseline policies.

Consequence assessment of gas pipeline failure caused by external pitting corrosion using an integrated Bayesian belief network and GIS model: Application with Alberta pipeline

Haile Woldesellasse et al.

Summary: This study proposes integrating GIS and Bayesian belief network to assess the consequence of transmission pipeline failure on the society and environment. The model incorporates information such as pipe characteristics, failure mode, and population density to calculate the casualty of the pipe segment. An event tree is used to represent the potential outcomes of a gas release based on important variables, and the societal and environmental consequences are estimated based on empirical equations and subjective judgment.

Summary: The study presents a novel model for generating artificial corrosion morphologies for metallic tubulars. The model computes pseudo-random 3D morphologies from corrosion statistics and shows statistically comparable results with observation. These artificial morphologies can be used for numerical analysis and probabilistic assessment of the remaining strength of corroded steel tubulars.

Summary: A novel evaluation methodology combining Markov model and dynamic Bayesian networks is proposed to assess system resilience under the influence of various external disasters. The method establishes an external disaster model, obtains system performance, and calculates resilience value through the integral of the performance curve. Probabilistic fatigue failure assessment of free spanning subsea pipeline using dynamic Bayesian network

Xinhong Li et al.

Summary: The probabilistic modeling of free spanning subsea pipeline fatigue failure is a challenging task due to its dynamic characteristics and uncertain information. This paper proposes a dynamic probabilistic methodology to capture the uncertainty and time dependence of fatigue failure scenario. By using Dynamic Bayesian Network, the model can estimate the probabilities of basic causations and assess the dynamic probability of fatigue failure at different time slices.
