Critical chain based Proactive-Reactive scheduling for Resource-Constrained project scheduling under uncertainty

Wuliang Peng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new proactive-reactive solution approach based on the critical chain method (CCM) for resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) under uncertainty. The reactive scheduling phase utilizes a discrete-time Markov decision process model with the look-up table method in reinforcement learning to dynamically adjust the baseline schedule during project execution. Computational experiments on benchmark instances demonstrate the efficiency and competitiveness of the approach.

A value of prediction model to estimate optimal response time to threats for accident prevention

Tiantian Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel value of (imperfect) prediction (VoP) model to estimate the optimal response time to potential threats that may lead to accidents. The model considers prediction accuracy, action failure probability, and parameters such as accident cost, response action cost, accident probability, prediction performance, and response strategy. A case study on iceberg management demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach, and a sensitivity study evaluates how optimal response time changes with different parameters. The study shows that responding as early as possible is reasonable for serious threats, while response can be postponed for moderate consequences. The VoP model can also calculate accuracy requirements, risk tolerance thresholds, precautionary measures, and maximum investment in accident prevention.

Robust and resilience budget allocation for projects with a risk-averse approach: A case study in healthcare projects

Reza Lotfi et al.

Summary: Budget Allocation for Projects (BAP) is a critical factor for completing projects in minimum time, especially for large-scale projects that impact people's lives. This study introduces the innovation of robust, resilience, and risk-averse BAP (3RBAP) model, which utilizes hybrid robust stochastic optimization to tackle budget fluctuation. A case study on healthcare project construction shows that implementing 3RBAP can significantly reduce the progress function and optimize project scheduling.

Joint decision-making of parallel machine scheduling restricted in job-machine release time and preventive maintenance with remaining useful life constraints

Xinxin He et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the correlation between the remaining useful life, job-machine release time and maintenance duration with machine enlistment age in parallel machine scheduling problem. A mixed integer programming model is constructed to minimize makespan and processing loss beyond RUL threshold, with a teaching and learning based optimization algorithm used to solve this NP-hard problem. The fault mode-assisted gated recurrent unit (FGRU) life prediction method is proven more accurate than three common methods, and joint decision-making is shown to effectively reduce time cost for manufacturing enterprises through benchmark cases.

Minimizing risk in Bayesian supply chain networks

Brendan Ruskey et al.

Summary: In this article, we propose an approach to minimize expected unmet demand in a supply chain using a Bayesian network. We consider node upgrades to reduce the probability of node failure and formulate the problem as a linear binary integer program. Unlike previous formulations, our model allows for flexible conditional probability tables and multiple types of upgrades. We present computational results and discuss the application to a larger food supply chain. We also introduce a preprocessing method to reduce the number of constraints and evaluate the runtime savings achieved.
