Spread of local anesthetics after erector spinae plane block: an MRI study in healthy volunteers

Marie Sorenstua et al.

Summary: The study found that after ESPB, local anesthetic consistently spread to the erector spinae muscles, the intercostal space, and the neural foramina. Epidural spread was evident in some volunteers. Sensory testing 30-50 minutes after ESPB showed highly variable results, generally under-representing the observed spread of the anesthetic on MRI.

Summary: This study found that compared with thoracic paravertebral block, intertransverse process block provided non-inferior analgesia within 30 minutes in the recovery room and non-inferior recovery quality at 24 hours following major breast cancer surgery.

The intertransverse process block single- or multiple-injection? A study protocol

Amanda de la Fuente Birkebaek et al.

Summary: This study aims to compare the efficacy of single- versus multiple-injection intertransverse process (ITP) blocks. The primary outcome is the extent of cutaneous sensory loss in the thoracic region. The study design is a randomised, double-blinded crossover trial with 12 male volunteers. The results of this study will provide important insights for the clinical application of ITP blocks.

Insignificant influence of the intertransverse process block for major breast cancer surgery: a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled, clinical trial

Martin Vedel Nielsen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of multiple-injection intertransverse process block in reducing postoperative pain in breast cancer surgery. The results showed that the block did not reduce opioid consumption within the first 24 postoperative hours or show substantial clinical positive outcomes.

Single-Injection Midpoint Transverse Process-to-Pleura Block Versus Thoracic Paravertebral Block for Postoperative Analgesia After Uniportal Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Xu Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the analgesic effect of midpoint transverse process-to-pleura block (MTPB) with thoracic paravertebral nerve block (TPVB) in patients undergoing uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (uVATS). The results showed that MTPB was noninferior to TPVB in terms of analgesic effect and was quicker and safer.

The Comparison of Postoperative Analgesic Efficacy of Ultrasound-Guided Paravertebral Block and Mid-Point Transverse Process Pleura Block in Mastectomy Surgeries: A Randomized Study

Agah Abdullah Kahramanlar et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative analgesic efficacy of Mid-Point Transverse Process Pleura Block (MTP) and Paravertebral Block (PVB) in patients undergoing breast surgery. The results showed that there was no significant difference in postoperative analgesic efficacy between MTP and PVB. MTP may be a safer alternative to PVB for breast surgery.

Infrared thermography for assessment of thoracic paravertebral block: a prospective observational study

Shuang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the feasibility of using skin temperature difference (Td) determined by infrared thermography (IT) to predict the spread of thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB). The increase of Td at the T4 dermatome between the blocked and unblocked side was found to be an early, quantitative, and reliable predictor of successful TPVB, with a sensitivity of 83.3% and a specificity of 100.0%.
