Recent developments in electrode materials for dual-ion batteries: Potential alternatives to conventional batteries

Heng-guo Wang et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion batteries have been successful in consumer electronics and energy vehicles, but the shortage of lithium and cobalt resources, as well as the need for better performance and safety, have led to the development of more efficient battery systems. Dual-ion batteries, with their environmental friendliness, low cost, excellent safety, high work voltage, and high energy density, offer an alternative to conventional batteries. However, they face challenges such as limited capacity and shorter cycle life. Various strategies have been adopted to overcome these challenges and promising results have been reported.

Visualizing Nucleation and Growth Process of Vanadium-Supramolecular Nanoribbons Self-Assembled by Rapid Cooling Method towards High-Capacity Vanadium Nitride Anode Materials

Yunlong Yang et al.

Summary: This study reports an efficient approach of rapid cooling for the large-scale fabrication of melamine-ammonium metavanadate supramolecular nanoribbons and visualizes the nucleation and growth process. The supramolecular nanoribbons assemble and grow epitaxial around the already-formed nuclei under thermal control, forming a uniform and wider 2D sheet. The derived vanadium nitride/carbon nanoribbons show high capacitance after pyrolysis.

Energy Storage Mechanism of Vanadium Nitride via Intercalating Different Atomic Radius for Expanding Interplanar Spacing

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: By preparing interplanar spacing expanded vanadium nitride materials with different impurity atoms intercalation, researchers achieved higher specific capacitance and identified that the charge storage of vanadium nitride is contributed by K+ de/intercalation in the interplanar spacing and redox reaction with OH- by adsorption on surface. This detailed study provides a new insight for the application of metal nitrides in supercapacitors and other energy storage devices.

Sodium ion storage performance and mechanism in orthorhombic V2O5 single-crystalline nanowires

Yanwei Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the electrochemical reaction process of electrodes is crucial for developing high-performance materials. The study investigated the sodium ion storage behavior and mechanism of orthorhombic V2O5 single-crystalline nanowires, demonstrating large irreversible capacity loss in the first cycle but excellent cycling stability in subsequent cycles. The diffusion coefficient of Na+ in the material was evaluated to be in the range of 10(-12) to 10(-11.5) cm(2)s(-1) by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT).

3D layered nanostructure of vanadium nitrides quantum Dots@Graphene anode materials via In-Situ redox reaction strategy

Yuanyou Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, vanadium nitride quantum dots with sizes of 1 to 3 nm were combined with graphene layers using a novel method of in-situ redox reaction and heat treatment to fabricate a new graphene anode material. The anchored vanadium quantum dots expanded the interlamellar spacing of graphene, increasing the dispersion of single-layer graphene and providing more channels for the movement of electrolyte, as well as more electrochemical active sites for ion absorption. This new anode material exhibited a high capacity of 272.9F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) with good cycling stability of 84% over 10,000 cycles.

Disclosure of charge storage mechanisms in molybdenum oxide nanobelts with enhanced supercapacitive performance induced by oxygen deficiency

Ping Qin et al.

Summary: This study enhances the supercapacitance storage of MoO2.39 by introducing oxygen vacancies in MoO3 nanobelts, mainly attributed to proton adsorption at the O1 sites and interlayer spacing expansion. Roughly 98% of the initial supercapacitance is retained after 1000 cycles, highlighting the reversible change in interlayer spacing as a key factor in maintaining supercapacitance.
