Long-Term Morbidity and Mortality Among Survivors of Neuroblastoma Diagnosed During Infancy: A Report From the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study

Danielle Novetsky Friedman et al.

Summary: This study examines the risk of late mortality, subsequent malignant neoplasms, and chronic health conditions in survivors of neuroblastoma diagnosed in infancy. The results show that the overall risk is relatively low, and there has been a decline in chronic health conditions with reduced exposure to radiation therapy in recent treatment eras.

Late Health Outcomes Among Survivors of Wilms Tumor Diagnosed Over Three Decades: A Report From the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study

Brent R. Weil et al.

Summary: This study evaluated long-term morbidity and mortality rates among unilateral, nonsyndromic Wilms tumor (WT) survivors based on conventional treatment regimens. The results showed that survivors in different treatment groups were at risk for late mortality and chronic health conditions, especially an elevated risk for intestinal obstruction and kidney failure. The intensity of treatment was associated with an increased risk for severe chronic health conditions.

Outcomes of Patients Treated in the UK Proton Overseas Programme: Non-central Nervous System Group

E. Hwang et al.

Summary: The UK Proton Overseas Programme (POP) launched in 2008 and established the Proton Clinical Outcomes Unit (PCOU) to collect, curate, and analyze outcomes data for UK patients referred and treated abroad with proton beam therapy (PBT) via the POP. This study reports the outcomes for non-central nervous system tumour patients treated from 2008 to September 2020 via the POP. Rating: 8 out of 10.

Neuroblastoma survivors at risk for developing subsequent neoplasms: A systematic review

Aimee S. R. Westerveld et al.

Summary: Neuroblastoma survivors have an increased risk of developing subsequent neoplasms, with thyroid carcinoma and acute myeloid leukemia being the most commonly observed types. Future research should focus on exploring risk factors for subsequent neoplasms in neuroblastoma survivors to improve treatment protocols and follow-up care.

Pediatric radiotherapy for thoracic and abdominal targets: Organ motion, reported margin sizes, and delineation variations-A systematic review

Karin M. Meijer et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigates organ motion, margin sizes, and delineation variability in pediatric radiation therapy. The study found heterogeneity regarding age, tumor types, anesthesia usage, and imaging modalities, resulting in wide variation in organ motion and delineation variability. The results suggest the potential for reducing margin sizes in children, but the existing differences hinder the use of standardized margins.

Pencil Beam Scanning Proton Therapy Case Selection for Paediatric Abdominal Neuroblastoma: Effects of Tumour Location and Bowel Gas

P. S. Lim et al.

Summary: Pencil beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy can reduce dose to normal tissues for pediatric abdominal neuroblastoma, particularly unilateral tumors, but may face dosimetric challenges with increased gastrointestinal air for midline tumors. Tumor location, PTV volume, and anterior extension of PTV are important factors in patient selection for PBS referral.

The spleen as an organ at risk in paediatric radiotherapy: A SIOP-Europe Radiation Oncology Working Group report

Niruthiga Arunagiri et al.

Summary: The risk of mortality from overwhelming infection due to radiation-induced splenic dysfunction is often overlooked in clinical trials and guidelines, with limited awareness among medical professionals. Over half of patients receive spleen doses exceeding 10 Gy, posing a significant risk. Evidence suggests a mortality risk of 5.5 with spleen doses in the 10-20 Gy range. Recommendations include routine spleen delineation, setting a spleen dose objective of <10 Gy, and considering antibiotic prophylaxis for doses >= 10 Gy.

Kidney Function after Treatment for Childhood Cancer: A Report from the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort Study

Daniel M. Green et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the prevalence of impaired kidney function and identified factors associated with increased odds for kidney impairment in adult survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed ?10 years earlier. About 2.1% of survivors had stages 3?5 CKD, with factors such as treatment with certain chemotherapy agents and kidney irradiation volume contributing to the risk.

Feasibility of Conebeam CT-based online adaptive radiotherapy for neoadjuvant treatment of rectal cancer

Rianne de Jong et al.

Summary: This study presented the first clinical experience of CBCT-based online adaptive radiotherapy for rectal cancer, showing feasibility with good plan quality, target coverage, and patient compliance. The process took an average of 34 minutes at the treatment machine, with 20 minutes devoted to acquiring CBCT, adjusting contours, creating a new plan, and verifying CTV coverage. Manual adjustments were required in 50% of fractions, but overall results were excellent.
