First magnetostratigraphic results in the A?n Beni Mathar-Guefa?t Basin, Northern High Plateaus (Morocco): The Pliocene-Pleistocene Dhar Iroumyane composite section

Josep M. Pares et al.

Summary: This study provides a geochronological framework for the Ain Beni Mathar-Guefait Basin in Morocco based on magnetostratigraphy and electron spin resonance. The results show a sedimentary infill in the basin from Gauss to Olduvai Chrons, as well as a major environmental change around 2.6 million years ago. These findings provide the first magnetostratigraphy-based chronological constraints for one of the largest basins in the region.

Lagomorpha (Mammalia) from the Pliocene-Pleistocene locality of Ahl al Oughlam, Morocco

Sevket Sen et al.

Summary: The fossil site of Ahl al Oughlam near Casablanca, Morocco, has yielded abundant remains of Lagomorpha, including cranial and postcranial bones and isolated teeth. These fossils represent a new species of Prolagidae and two new species of Leporidae. They display unique characteristics and share similarities with other African and European genera.

The last North African hipparions-hipparion decline and extinction follows a common pattern

Jan van der Made et al.

Summary: This article reviews the latest research on the localities of Ain Boucherit and Ain Hanech in Algeria, which led to the dating of the oldest stone tools in North Africa and the discovery of new material of the rare three-toed horse Hipparion ambiguum. It discusses the extinction patterns of hipparions in the Old World, the taxonomical classification issues, and the relationship between their decline and major environmental change.

Pliocene-Early Pleistocene continental climate and vegetation in Europe based on stable isotope compositions of mammal tooth enamel

Peter Szabo et al.

Summary: This study examines the oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of mammalian tooth enamel from the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene in South and Central Europe to reconstruct vegetation distribution and changes in precipitation isotope composition. The results show a transition from a warmer climate to a cooler climate during this period, with vegetation distribution similar to present-day patterns.

Summary: The study reviews the evolution and ecological characteristics of different populations of Hipparion animals in Eurasia and Africa, tracing their origins back to North America and their subsequent expansions. The research finds that Hipparion animals underwent multiple diversifications and extinctions over the past 50 million years, with changes in body size and ecological habits closely related to environmental conditions.

The Plio-Pleistocene sequence of Oued Boucherit (Algeria): A unique chronologically-constrained archaeological and palaeontological record in North Africa

Mathieu Duval et al.

Summary: The Oued Boucherit area in North East Algeria hosts a unique succession of archaeological and palaeontological deposits spanning from the late Pliocene to the Early Pleistocene. The sequence records the earliest evolutionary steps of lithic technology, with Oldowan and Acheulean assemblages identified, which are close in chronology to evidence found in East Africa and South Africa. This site provides a valuable opportunity to study the evolution of large mammal faunal assemblages in North Africa and the evolution of palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental conditions in the region.

Microhabitat Variability in Human Evolution

Robert Patalano et al.

Summary: Climate variability and hominin evolution are closely linked, but hypotheses examining the impact of large-scale climate shifts on hominin landscape ecology are often constrained by proxy data limitations. To better understand ecosystem response to climate variability and hominin adaptations, cross-disciplinary datasets in direct association with archaeological and fossil records are needed. Exploitation of microhabitats was a key skill that allowed Homo to adapt to fluctuating climates and environments throughout the Pleistocene.

Intrataxonomic trends in herbivore enamel δ13C are decoupled from ecosystem woody cover

Joshua R. Robinson et al.

Summary: By combining a large dataset of δ13C enamel data with estimates of woody cover in 30 African ecosystems, the study shows little correlation between intrataxonomic variation in δ13C enamel and vegetation structure. Therefore, the authors recommend a community-level approach for making vegetation inferences.

Carbon and strontium isotope ratios shed new light on the paleobiology and collapse of Theropithecus, a primate experiment in graminivory

Luke D. Fannin et al.

Summary: The rise of tropical grasslands in the Cenozoic had a significant impact on the evolution of ungulates and primates, leading to adaptations for a grass-based diet. Within the lineage of monkeys, Theropithecus species exhibited selective and bulk-feeding behaviors related to grass consumption, which influenced body mass variation over time. The increasing strontium isotope variability among North African theropiths suggests greater lifetime travel and energetic costs in response to diminishing food resources, potentially contributing to the extinction of the largest monkey species, T. oswaldi.

Summary: The study describes a new small-sized species of Dinofelis from North Africa, which is smaller than previously known African Dinofelis and likely occupies a different ecological niche. This discovery adds complexity to the high intraspecific competition among large carnivorans in the Plio-Pleistocene of Africa.

First high resolution chronostratigraphy for the early North African Acheulean at Casablanca (Morocco)

Rosalia Gallotti et al.

Summary: The emergence of the Acheulean tools marked a significant technological advancement in human evolution, dating back to at least approximately 1.3 million years ago in North Africa. Despite the lack of well-dated sites in reliable contexts, recent research has provided a more robust chronostratigraphic framework for the early North African Acheulean culture.
