A radiocarbon chronology of Holocene climate change and sea-level rise at the Delmarva Peninsula, US Mid-Atlantic Coast

Kelvin W. Ramsey et al.

Summary: Radiocarbon dates from sites along the Delmarva Peninsula provide a record of deposition and sea-level rise, as well as non-marine wetland deposition. The data show boundaries of Holocene subepochs in the mid-Atlantic region of eastern North America, and allow for regional subdivision of the Holocene into six depositional and climate phases. This information is valuable for archaeological studies of human occupation in relation to climate change and for future sea-level reconstructions.

The role of wetland expansion and successional processes in methane emissions from northern wetlands during the Holocene

Claire C. Treat et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed CH4 emissions from northern peatlands from 13,000 BP to present and found that changes in wetland type have significant impact on CH4 emissions. The emissions stabilized and decreased over time as high-emitting fens transitioned to lower-emitting bogs, but widespread permafrost formation after 1000 BP resulted in decreased emissions, with the possibility of increase again with permafrost thaw.

Red maple dominance and community homogenization in a disturbed forested wetland

Raymond F. Ludwig et al.

Summary: The homogenization of forest stands with generalist species in the Great Dismal Swamp (GDS) is a result of past disturbances. Red maple (Acer rubrum) is the dominant species in GDS, with its importance negatively correlated with stand density, richness, and diversity. Different forest community types exist along a hydrologic gradient, suggesting potential drivers of forested communities.
