Climatic stability recorded in speleothems may contribute to higher biodiversity in the Cape Floristic Region

Kerstin Braun et al.

Summary: By analyzing the oxygen (delta O-18) and carbon (delta C-13) isotopic records from a cave in the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) in southwestern Africa, this study found that the highly diverse western CFR experienced climatic stability across several glacial-interglacial cycles, compared to other regions. This suggests that lower extinction rates associated with Pleistocene biome stability may explain the higher biodiversity in the CFR relative to other Mediterranean Climate Ecosystems (MCEs).

The eco-evolutionary significance of rainfall constancy for facultative CAM photosynthesis

Andreas H. Schweiger et al.

Summary: This study found that rainfall and its temporal variation can predict CAM dependence in the leaf-succulent genus Drosanthemum, with high predictive power of rainfall constancy. The predictive power of rainfall seasonality and temperature-related variables was negligible. The evolutionary history of the tested clades significantly affected the relationship between rainfall constancy and CAM dependence.

South African speleothems reveal influence of high- and low-latitude forcing over the past 113.5 k.y.

Brian Chase et al.

Summary: This study examines the variation in oxygen and carbon isotope values in a speleothem from the Cango Caves in southernmost South Africa, establishing a coherent regional composite record spanning the past 113,500 years. The findings reveal a complex dynamic of South African climate change, influenced by both changing global boundary conditions and environmental forcing factors from low and high latitudes.

Carbon isotope composition of plant photosynthetic tissues reflects a Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) continuum in the majority of CAM lineages

Thibaud F. E. Messerschmid et al.

Summary: The stable carbon isotope composition, expressed as delta C-13, in plant tissues provides valuable information about photosynthetic pathways. CAM plants utilize a more efficient form of photosynthesis compared to C-3 plants, resulting in less negative delta C-13 values. While past studies have shown bimodal distribution in CAM plant lineages, some exceptions exist. The continuum between CAM and C-3 photosynthesis cautioned against the usage of a delta C-13 threshold in macroevolutionary studies, urging for lineage-specific reconstructions rather than a unifying model of CAM evolution.
