The role of maternal trauma and discipline types in emotional processing among Syrian refugee children

Kirsi Peltonen et al.

Summary: This study aims to examine the impact of parenting practices in the context of post-traumatic stress on children's emotional processing. The findings suggest that spanking as a discipline type is associated with poorer emotional processing, while withholding of media access is associated with better emotional processing. Additionally, younger and less religious mothers are more prone to use spanking.

Real-time processes in the development of action planning

Ori Ossmy et al.

Summary: Planning multi-step actions is crucial for survival and a sign of intelligence. Previous research used a top-down approach, while this study takes a bottom-up approach to examine the developmental changes in the real-time interaction between perceptual, neural, and motor components of action planning.

Subjective stress and proactive and reactive cognitive control strategies

Robyn A. Husa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of acute stress on cognitive control strategies, finding that acute stress did not significantly impact the use of proactive or reactive control strategies. However, within the stress group, higher subjective stress responses were associated with less frequent use of proactive control strategy and more frequent use of reactive control strategy during performance of cognitive tasks.

War-related trauma linked to increased sustained attention to threat in children

Julia Michalek et al.

Summary: Experiences of war and displacement have profound effects on children's affective development and mental health. This study suggests that war-related trauma may have differential effects on the early and later stages of affective processing in refugee children.

Hidden talents in context: Cognitive performance with abstract versus ecological stimuli among adversity-exposed youth

Ethan S. Young et al.

Summary: Adversity-exposed youth tend to score lower on cognitive tests, but the hidden talents approach suggests that some abilities can be enhanced by adversity, especially under ecologically relevant conditions. A study on 618 youth found that those exposed to violence and poverty scored lower than their peers with abstract stimuli, but performed almost equally well with ecological stimuli.

The executive functioning of Burundian refugee youth: Associations with individual, family and community factors

Florian Scharpf et al.

Summary: This study examined the associations between factors on different ecological levels and executive functioning (EF) among refugee youth. The findings revealed positive associations between trauma exposure and cognitive flexibility, and between posttraumatic stress symptoms and selective attention and working memory. Having more siblings, higher father's socioeconomic status, and a better father-child relationship were related to better EF. Higher levels of maltreatment by mothers were related to lower inhibitory control. Higher peer support was related to higher working memory.

Maternal Postpartum Depression Impacts Infants' Joint Attention Differentially Across Cultures

Kim Astor et al.

Summary: This study assessed the relationship between maternal postpartum depression and infants' development of joint attention, comparing Bhutanese and Swedish infants. The results showed that Bhutanese and Swedish infants followed similar developmental trajectories, but the relationship between infants' gaze following and maternal postpartum depression differed between the two groups. This suggests the presence of protective factors in the interdependent family model.

Developmental Changes in the Association Between Cognitive Control and Anxiety

Courtney A. Filippi et al.

Summary: This study found that planful behavior, consistent with using a proactive strategy, varies by both age and anxiety symptoms. Young children (ages 8-12 years) with high anxiety exhibit significantly less planful behavior than similarly-aged children with low anxiety. These findings emphasize the importance of considering age and anxiety symptoms when studying cognitive control in youth.

Working memory and emotional interpretation bias in a sample of Syrian refugee adolescents

Sven C. Mueller et al.

Summary: This study examined cognitive-affective processing in refugee adolescents from Syria who now lived in Istanbul, Turkey, and found that those with high trauma symptoms performed worse in cognitive control but emotion did not modulate this effect. Additionally, all youths exhibited a bias towards interpreting surprise faces as more negative, with high trauma symptom youth being quicker to allocate them to the positive emotion category.

Maternal childhood trauma and perinatal distress are related to infants' focused attention from 6 to 18 months

Hsing-Fen Tu et al.

Summary: This study found that maternal exposure to non-interpersonal traumatic events in childhood was associated with infants' less focused attention to audio-visual stimuli, while exposure to interpersonal traumatic events in childhood may moderate the negative impact of maternal anxiety on infants' attention development. The results underscore the significance of maternal mental health in the development of focused attention in infants.

Toward a formal theory of proactivity

F. Lieder et al.

Summary: Humans have the capacity to proactively set and pursue their goals, beyond merely reacting to their environment and impulses. The extent to which individuals leverage this capacity varies across people and situations. This article proposes and evaluates a model of proactivity and reactivity, suggesting that proactivity can be understood in terms of computational models of meta-control.

The dual mechanisms of cognitive control and their relation to reasoning and the item-position effect

Helene M. von Gugelberg et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of proactive control on test performance in reasoning tests, suggesting that rule learning in early items contributes to better performance in later items. The findings showed that the proactive control group was more likely to exhibit an item-position effect compared to the reactive control group, resulting in higher scores in reasoning tests as a measure of fluid intelligence.

Social cognition in refugee children: an experimental cross-sectional study of emotional processing with Syrian families in Turkish communities

War trauma and infant motor, cognitive, and socioemotional development: Maternal mental health and dyadic interaction as explanatory processes

Summary: The study found that maternal prenatal exposure to traumatic war events did not have a direct impact on infants' developmental skills at 18 months, but instead predicted higher developmental skills. However, maternal exposure to high levels of trauma may lead to postpartum mental health problems, which in turn could affect mother-infant interaction quality and infant development.

Parenting in Times of War: A Meta-Analysis and Qualitative Synthesis of War Exposure, Parenting, and Child Adjustment

Hend Eltanamly et al.

Summary: This study revealed that parents who have experienced war tend to show less warmth and more harshness towards their children, partially explaining the impact of war exposure on children's adjustment. It also found that the nature of war-related trauma affects parenting behaviors differently, with parents showing harshness in highly dangerous settings and more warmth in less dangerous situations.
