The role of maternal trauma and discipline types in emotional processing among Syrian refugee children

Summary: This study aims to examine the impact of parenting practices in the context of post-traumatic stress on children's emotional processing. The findings suggest that spanking as a discipline type is associated with poorer emotional processing, while withholding of media access is associated with better emotional processing. Hidden talents in context: Cognitive performance with abstract versus ecological stimuli among adversity-exposed youth

Summary: Adversity-exposed youth tend to score lower on cognitive tests, but the hidden talents approach suggests that some abilities can be enhanced by adversity, especially under ecologically relevant conditions. A study on 618 youth found that those exposed to violence and poverty scored lower than their peers with abstract stimuli, but performed almost equally well with ecological stimuli.

The executive functioning of Burundian refugee youth: Associations with individual, family and community factors

Summary: This study examined the associations between factors on different ecological levels and executive functioning (EF) among refugee youth. The findings revealed positive associations between trauma exposure and cognitive flexibility, and between posttraumatic stress symptoms and selective attention and working memory. Having more siblings, higher father's socioeconomic status, and a better father-child relationship were related to better EF. Higher levels of maltreatment by mothers were related to lower inhibitory control. Higher peer support was related to higher working memory.

Maternal Postpartum Depression Impacts Infants' Joint Attention Differentially Across Cultures

Summary: This study assessed the relationship between maternal postpartum depression and infants' development of joint attention, comparing Bhutanese and Swedish infants. The results showed that Bhutanese and Swedish infants followed similar developmental trajectories, but the relationship between infants' gaze following and maternal postpartum depression differed between the two groups. This suggests the presence of protective factors in the interdependent family model.

Working memory and emotional interpretation bias in a sample of Syrian refugee adolescents

Summary: This study examined cognitive-affective processing in refugee adolescents from Syria who now lived in Istanbul, Turkey, and found that those with high trauma symptoms performed worse in cognitive control but emotion did not modulate this effect. Additionally, all youths exhibited a bias towards interpreting surprise faces as more negative, with high trauma symptom youth being quicker to allocate them to the positive emotion category.

Maternal childhood trauma and perinatal distress are related to infants' focused attention from 6 to 18 months

Summary: This study found that maternal exposure to non-interpersonal traumatic events in childhood was associated with infants' less focused attention to audio-visual stimuli, while exposure to interpersonal traumatic events in childhood may moderate the negative impact of maternal anxiety on infants' attention development. The results underscore the significance of maternal mental health in the development of focused attention in infants.

Toward a formal theory of proactivity

The dual mechanisms of cognitive control and their relation to reasoning and the item-position effect
