Semi-automatic extraction of dangerous rock blocks from jointed rock exposures based on a discontinuity trace map

Jianhua Yan et al.

Summary: This study develops a new semi-automatic dangerous rock blocks extraction approach using a rock slope surface model generated from UAV digital photogrammetry. The approach integrates geometric and mechanical modelling processes and considers line-type discontinuities on block formation. It is suitable for quantitative assessment of rockfall sources and provides automatic location, geometric, and stability results for identified blocks. The proposed approach is applied to a railway bridge in China for rockfall hazard evaluation.

Characterization of Joint Roughness Heterogeneity and Its Application in Representative Sample Investigations

Shi-Gui Du et al.

Summary: In this paper, a global search method is proposed to investigate the heterogeneity of rock joint roughness. The method analyzes the statistical characteristics of roughness from all samples extracted from different locations of the joint. Compared to conventional methods, the global search method provides a more accurate representation of the overall roughness and facilitates the identification of the most representative samples and their positions.

Automatic Extraction of Rock Discontinuities from the Point Cloud Using Dynamic DBSCAN Algorithm

Ming Tang et al.

Summary: The detection and mapping of rock discontinuities are crucial in excavation processes. This study presents a method using 3D printing technology to create discontinuity models with different characteristics. Through terrestrial laser scanning, the proposed method successfully extracts the dip, dip direction, and roughness of the discontinuities from the point cloud. The results show that the angle between discontinuities and the presence of roughness significantly affect the recognition effect.
