History of Low Hourly Wage and All-Cause Mortality Among Middle-aged Workers

Katrina L. Kezios et al.

Summary: Preliminary research suggests that sustained low-wage earning during midlife may have long-term health consequences. This study found an association between sustained low-wage earning and mortality, particularly when accompanied by employment instability. If causal, these findings suggest that improving the financial standing of low-wage workers, such as through minimum wage laws, could improve mortality outcomes.

Summary: This study found that work-related policies can impact food security for low-income populations, with participants in Raleigh facing an unsupportive policy environment and workers in Minneapolis reaping minimal benefits from wage increases. Many workers struggle with complex financial tradeoffs, emphasizing the need for more sophisticated evaluations considering broader policy contexts and long-term effects.

The determinants of racial disparities in obesity: baseline evidence from a natural experiment

Thomas Durfee et al.

Summary: This study uses baseline data from an observational study to explore the factors contributing to racial and gender disparities in obesity. The samples from low-income workers in Minneapolis and Raleigh show that respondents in Minneapolis generally have lower BMIs. Race and gender have significant effects on BMI estimates, with the intersectionality of being Black and a woman explaining most of the disparities between the two cities. Age and education differences account for the BMI gaps between Black women in Minneapolis and Raleigh.
