The determinants of racial disparities in obesity: baseline evidence from a natural experiment

Summary: This study uses baseline data from an observational study to explore the factors contributing to racial and gender disparities in obesity. The samples from low-income workers in Minneapolis and Raleigh show that respondents in Minneapolis generally have lower BMIs. Race and gender have significant effects on BMI estimates, with the intersectionality of being Black and a woman explaining most of the disparities between the two cities. Age and education differences account for the BMI gaps between Black women in Minneapolis and Raleigh.
