The unique pathways to coordinate specialty care for Black families navigating early psychosis: A preliminary report

Oladunni Oluwoye et al.

Summary: This study used qualitative methods to explore the pathways to coordinated specialty care (CSC) among Black individuals experiencing their first episode of psychosis. The findings revealed that participants sought very little help from formal sources before the onset of psychosis and identified prior childhood experiences that were viewed as traumatic. After the onset of psychosis, participants highlighted the importance of family members in the initiation of care, but also expressed difficulties in navigating services and engaging with clinical staff, leading to further delays in accessing CSC.

Eliminating Explicit and Implicit Biases in Health Care: Evidence and Research Needs

Monica B. Vela et al.

Summary: Health care providers exhibit explicit and implicit biases against marginalized groups, which impact patient-clinician communication, clinical decision making, and institutional practices. Current interventions have limited effectiveness in changing provider behavior, and addressing bias requires systemic changes within and outside the health care system.

An Intersectional Approach to Ethnoracial Disparities in Pathways to Care Among Individuals With Psychosis in Coordinated Specialty Care

Els van der Ven et al.

Summary: This study examines the differences in pathways to care for first-episode psychosis among different ethnoracial groups and empirically derived clusters. The results show that there are variations in treatment duration among different ethnoracial groups and different clusters. Studying treatment duration inequalities through an ethnoracial lens can help improve our understanding of the inequities resulting from delays in treatment initiation.

Association Between Race/Ethnicity and Disparities in Health Care Use Before First-Episode Psychosis Among Privately Insured Young Patients

Hanke Heun-Johnson et al.

Summary: Racial and ethnic disparities in health care use were present in the year before the first episode of psychosis, with Black and Hispanic patients less likely to receive behavioral health diagnoses and treatment compared to White patients. These disparities persisted even after controlling for socioeconomic variables. Low rates of outpatient behavioral health care use may lead to longer duration of untreated psychosis and poorer long-term outcomes, emphasizing the importance of equal access to preventive care for timely detection and intervention.
