Microbiota of the gastrointestinal tract: Friend or foe?

Marina A. Senchukova

Summary: The gut microbiota is an external organ of the human body that plays a crucial role in metabolic regulation and protection. With over 3 million genes, it significantly outnumbers the human genome. Changes in the composition of the microbiome can lead to disruptions in bacterial metabolite synthesis, intestinal barrier function, and inflammation, thereby contributing to various diseases. Understanding the impact of the gut microbiota on health requires considering it as a unified biological system with interconnected components.

Beyond BMI: cardiometabolic measures as predictors of impulsivity and white matter changes in adolescents

Anna Prunell-Castane et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between cardiometabolic measures and impulse behaviors in obese adolescents. It found that higher triglycerides and BMI were associated with more impulsive behavior, while higher glucose and diastolic blood pressure were related to emotional eating. Additionally, there was a negative relationship between cingulum fractional anisotropy and glycated hemoglobin. The evaluation of obesity-related neurocognitive differences should include both body mass index and cardiometabolic measures for a comprehensive understanding.

Probiotic supplementation attenuates age-related sarcopenia via the gut-muscle axis in SAMP8 mice

Li-Han Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that supplementation with Lactobacillus casei Shirota can alleviate age-related declines in muscle mass, strength, and mitochondrial function, prevent inflammation, and oxidative stress, as well as modulate the gut microbiota composition and predicted bacterial functions. These results suggest that LcS may represent a promising strategy for mitigating age-related muscle impairments through the gut-muscle axis.

Antipsychotic-induced gastrointestinal hypomotility and the alteration in gut microbiota in patients with schizophrenia

Yue Xu et al.

Summary: The study found alternations in gut microbiota in schizophrenia patients with antipsychotic-induced constipation, indicating potential effects of antipsychotic agents on gastrointestinal motility through microbiome-related metabolites. Specific bacteria like Synergistetes might act as anti-inflammatory factors in the healthy gut and be related to colonic transit motility, which contradicts previous findings in gastroenterology literature. The causal effects remain unknown, but the study provides new insights into understanding antipsychotic-induced constipation mechanisms.

Summary: Increased insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion are significant characteristics of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Accumulation of senescent cells in adipose tissues and pancreatic beta-cells contribute to these dysfunctions. Removing senescent cells shows promise in preventing or improving diabetes-related diseases.

Summary: This study investigates the role of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in schizophrenia (SCZ), showing that alterations in SCFA concentrations may be associated with the pathogenesis and cognitive impairment of SCZ. The findings have important implications for further understanding the etiology of SCZ and assisting clinical treatment.

Cistanche tubulosa phenylethanoid glycosides suppressed adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and improved obesity and insulin resistance in high-fat diet induced obese mice

Dilinazi Abudujilile et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that Cistanche tubulosa phenylethanoid glycosides (CTPG) effectively suppressed adipogenesis and lipid accumulation. It also improved high-fat diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance by activating specific signaling pathways and regulating gut microbiota composition and metabolic functions.

Summary: The gut microbiome interacts with the central nervous system through the gut-brain axis, affecting behaviors and psychiatric conditions. The use of atypical antipsychotic drugs may alter the microbiome and cause adverse effects, while prebiotics and probiotics have been shown to be effective tools in managing microorganisms. Novel therapies targeting the microbiome for alleviating adverse effects of AAPDs are also rapidly developing.

Gut microbiota markers associated with obesity and overweight in Italian adults

Vanessa Palmas et al.

Summary: This study characterized the gut microbiota of overweight/obese patients and normal-weight controls of Sardinian origin, identifying differences and associations with obesity-related factors. The results showed a decrease in Bacteroidetes taxa and an increase in Firmicutes taxa in obese patients, indicating a potential link between microbiota composition and obesity. Additionally, an increase in bacterial taxa with endotoxic activity was observed in obese patients compared to normal-weight controls.

Gut Microbiota Serves a Predictable Outcome of Short-Term Low-Carbohydrate Diet (LCD) Intervention for Patients with Obesity

Susu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the impact of gut microbiota on the efficacy of a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD). After 12 weeks of LCD intervention, the relative abundance of butyrate-producing bacteria significantly increased, and participants with a higher relative abundance of Bacteroidaceae Bacteroides at baseline showed better response to the intervention. Additionally, an artificial neural network prediction model outperformed a general linear model in predicting weight loss outcomes after LCD intervention.
