Associations of Childhood and Adolescent Depression With Adult Psychiatric and Functional Outcomes

William E. Copeland et al.

Summary: This study found that experiencing depression in childhood/adolescence is associated with anxiety, illicit drug disorders, worse health, criminal behavior, and social functioning in adulthood, with these associations persisting even when accounting for psychiatric comorbidities and adversities during childhood. Timing of onset of depression matters, with adolescent-onset depression leading to worse outcomes than child-onset depression. Using specialty mental health services is protective against adverse adult diagnostic outcomes.

Integrating nutrition into the education sector in low- and middle-income countries: A framework for a win-win collaboration

Yvonne Yiru Xu et al.

Summary: Malnutrition, both undernutrition and overnutrition, is a global public health concern, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The education sector has high potential to improve nutrition outcomes through providing food in schools and health education. Collaboration with the agriculture sector, integration of culturally appropriate nutrition education, and skilled workforce support are essential for successful implementation. There is a need for improved monitoring and evaluation of nutrition programs in schools, as well as further research on leveraging the education sector in addressing overweight and obesity rates, particularly in LMICs.
