The Impact of Military Sexual Trauma and Warfare Exposure on Women Veterans' Perinatal Outcomes

Yael I. Nillni et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of warfare exposure and military sexual trauma (MST) on adverse perinatal outcomes among women veterans. Findings suggest that MST, but not warfare exposure, predicts negative perinatal outcomes such as lower infant birth weight and increased likelihood of experiencing postpartum depression and/or anxiety.

Non-suicidal self-injury in US military veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study

Lorig K. Kachadourian et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence of lifetime non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among US military veterans and found that NSSI was associated with age, gender, race, marital status, and economic status. Veterans with a history of NSSI were more likely to have adverse childhood experiences, military trauma, and mental disorders, as well as a history of suicide attempts.

Affective states and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI): Results from an ecological momentary assessment study of veterans with NSSI disorder

Kirsten H. Dillon et al.

Summary: This study using ecological momentary assessment found that anger/hostility and sadness were most strongly associated with NSSI urges and behaviors among veterans. Multivariate regression revealed that anger/hostility, self-disgust, and happiness (inversely related) were contemporaneously associated with NSSI behaviors, while all five basic affective states were contemporaneously associated with NSSI urges. In a lagged model, anger/hostility and sadness were associated with subsequent NSSI urges but not behaviors.

A Person-Centered Approach to Adolescent Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: Predictors and Correlates in a Community Sample

Melinda Reinhardt et al.

Summary: This study identified two classes of self-injury behaviors among high school students, severe/multimethod NSSI and mild/moderate NSSI. The severe class is at greater risk for poor mental health, which can exacerbate further NSSI acts and early identification of vulnerable adolescents can help interrupt NSSI trajectories into emerging adulthood.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the operational definition and conceptualization of NSSI by soliciting opinions from individuals with NSSI expertise. The findings revealed agreement on specific NSSI definitional aspects but also potential discrepancies in classifying specific behaviors as NSSI.

Self-injury motives: A person-centered examination

Katherine L. Dixon-Gordon et al.

Summary: This study identified five classes of motives for nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and found that participants who reported multiple motives may be more clinically severe. Additionally, participants who expressed a strong desire to communicate with others or punish themselves may be at a higher risk for frequent NSSI.

Summary: The present study developed and validated a brief screening instrument called the Screen for Nonsuicidal Self-Injury (SNSI), which efficiently identifies individuals engaging in NSSI and likely to benefit from comprehensive assessment and treatment programs. The SNSI demonstrated good internal consistency, construct validity, and predictive validity.

Typologies of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Functions and Clinical Correlates Among Inpatient Youth

Leah Sack et al.

Summary: This study identified typologies of specific non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) functions among youth admitted for psychiatric hospitalization and investigated clinically relevant correlates. A latent class analysis found two NSSI function typologies, Multiple Functions and Single/Avoidant Function, which were associated with different clinical correlates. Youth in the Multiple Functions class reported higher frequency of self-injury and more severe BPD symptoms. These findings are important for guiding targeted psychological screening and interventions for inpatient youth.

Summary: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a strong predictor of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The prevalence of NSSI among men is often underestimated. This study found slightly higher NSSI prevalence rates among male veterans, with wall/object punching being the most common NSSI method used.

Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Among College Students: A Latent Class Analysis

Marisa E. Marraccini et al.

Summary: This study utilized latent class analysis to identify three subgroups of college students based on their history of self-injurious thoughts and behaviors, with differences in correlates such as suicidal ideation and fearlessness of death. The results highlighted the importance of fearlessness of death in distinguishing suicide attempters from non-attempters, emphasizing the need for mental health and suicide prevention initiatives on college campuses.
