Non-suicidal self-injury in US military veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence of lifetime non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among US military veterans and found that NSSI was associated with age, gender, race, marital status, and economic status. Veterans with a history of NSSI were more likely to have adverse childhood experiences, military trauma, and mental disorders, as well as a history of suicide attempts.

Affective states and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI): Results from an ecological momentary assessment study of veterans with NSSI disorder

Summary: This study using ecological momentary assessment found that anger/hostility and sadness were most strongly associated with NSSI urges and behaviors among veterans. Multivariate regression revealed that anger/hostility, self-disgust, and happiness (inversely related) were contemporaneously associated with NSSI behaviors, while all five basic affective states were contemporaneously associated with NSSI urges. In a lagged model, anger/hostility and sadness were associated with subsequent NSSI urges but not behaviors.

Typologies of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Functions and Clinical Correlates Among Inpatient Youth

Summary: This study identified typologies of specific non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) functions among youth admitted for psychiatric hospitalization and investigated clinically relevant correlates. A latent class analysis found two NSSI function typologies, Multiple Functions and Single/Avoidant Function, which were associated with different clinical correlates. Youth in the Multiple Functions class reported higher frequency of self-injury and more severe BPD symptoms. These findings are important for guiding targeted psychological screening and interventions for inpatient youth.
