Posttraumatic growth among health care workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic

Jordyn H. Feingold et al.

Summary: The study found that nearly 80% of frontline healthcare workers reported pandemic-related posttraumatic growth, largely driven by salutogenic factors. Interventions to promote mental and physical health factors may help facilitate posttraumatic growth and reduce the risk of burnout and pandemic-related PTSD symptoms.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in US Military Veterans: Results From the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study

Blair E. Wisco et al.

Summary: The lifetime prevalence of PTSD among US military veterans is 9.4%, slightly higher than previous estimates. Direct exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) is associated with increased odds of lifetime and past-month PTSD, while indirect exposure does not show this association. Both PTSD and direct PTEs have a negative impact on functional impairment.

Addressing psychological resilience during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: a rapid review

Judite Blanc et al.

Summary: The mental health impact of COVID-19 on populations is significant, prompting an urgent need for interventions. This review discusses how individuals and communities leverage pre-existing factors to enhance their psychological resilience during the pandemic. Findings show that social support, outdoor activities, spiritual beliefs, and a sense of meaning have been important coping mechanisms for populations globally. While some intervention models have been proposed, their universal applicability remains uncertain, and there is a lack of translational data in this area.

Factors associated with post-traumatic growth in response to the COVID-19 pandemic: Results from a national sample of US military veterans

Peter J. Na et al.

Summary: The study found that worries about the pandemic's effect on physical and mental health, posttraumatic growth in response to previous traumas, and pandemic-related avoidance symptoms were the strongest correlates of pandemic-related posttraumatic growth in U.S. veterans. An inverted-U shaped relationship between pandemic-related PTSD symptoms and endorsement of posttraumatic growth was observed, with moderate severity of PTSD symptoms being optimal in identifying veterans who experienced posttraumatic growth.

Positive mental health and perceived change in mental health among adults in Canada during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic

Colin A. Capaldi et al.

Summary: Canadian surveys conducted in Fall 2020 indicate a decline in self-rated mental health, community belonging, and life satisfaction compared to 2019. Factors such as gender, age, living in urban areas, and absence from work due to COVID-19 were associated with lower odds of reporting similar or better mental health during Fall 2020. Continued surveillance is crucial for improving and strengthening mental health in Canada post-pandemic.
