Enhanced effect and mechanism of colloidal nano-SiO2 modified rubber concrete

Yaoqun Xu et al.

Summary: By adding highly dispersible colloidal nano-SiO2 (CNS) as an admixture, the strength and applicability of rubber concrete can be enhanced. The results show that the addition of CNS reduces the width of microcracks in rubber concrete and increases the early compressive strength by 30.3%.

Experimental investigations on the mechanical properties and damage detection of carbon nanotubes modified crumb rubber concrete

Suliman Khan et al.

Summary: This study presents the mechanical characterization and cracking monitoring of a modified crumb rubber (MCR) concrete design mix reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using the acoustic emission (AE) technique. The results showed that the bridging effect of MWCNTs and MCR in the concrete mix improved the flexural and compressive strengths by 18.3% and 26.5%, respectively. The MWCNT-MCR concrete exhibited improved ductility, axial strain, and toughness compared to the reference specimens.

Sustainable use of chemically modified tyre rubber in concrete: Machine learning based novel predictive model

Piyu Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, gene expression programming (GEP) was used to establish empirical models for estimating the mechanical properties of concrete made with NaOH treated crumb rubber (CR). Through a comprehensive literature review, a reliable database of compressive strength of concrete made with NaOH treated CR was established. The performance of the GEP model was evaluated and compared with linear and non-linear regression models, showing that the GEP model was more accurate and had better generalization and prediction capabilities. The results of this research can promote the reuse of CR for green concrete, leading to environmental safety and economic advantages.

Modification of rubber particles and its application in rubberized concrete

Yueming Dou et al.

Summary: Using rubber particles as a replacement for fine aggregates in concrete can reduce freezing damage and black pollution. However, this addition decreases the compressive strength of concrete due to poor bonding strength between the rubber particles and concrete. This study proposes a coating modification method using silica powder and water glass to improve the stability of the rubber particles. The results show that the prepared concrete bricks with coated modified rubber particles have high compressive strength and good frost resistance.

Experimental study of NaOH pretreated crumb rubber as substitute of fine aggregate in concrete

Khurram Shahzad et al.

Summary: The addition of discarded scrap tires can pose serious environmental and health risks. However, these risks can be mitigated by partially replacing crumb rubber in concrete with fine aggregate. This study investigates the impact of pretreating crumb rubber with different concentrations of sodium hydroxide for varying durations. The mechanical performance of hardened concrete was used to evaluate the effect of pretreatment. The results show that pretreatment negatively affects the strength of the concrete at low dosages of crumb rubber, but can aid in recovering strength at high dosages. Additionally, a numerical relation between the mechanical characteristics of crumb rubber concrete has been developed, showing a strong correlation.

Modification of Rubberized Concrete: A Review

Changming Bu et al.

Summary: One of the major environmental concerns today is the black pollution caused by the accumulation of waste rubber. Rubber concrete has been proven to be effective in solving this issue, but it does compromise the mechanical properties of the concrete. Various studies have been conducted to modify rubberized concrete, focusing on compressive strength, durability, and insulation performance. It has been found that chemical pre-treatments, such as sodium hydroxide, can greatly enhance the adhesion between rubber particles and cement matrixes, while mineral powder additives like silica fume and fiber admixtures such as PP fibers can improve the compressive strength of rubber concrete.

Compressive behaviour and fragment size distribution model for failure mode prediction of rubber concrete under impact loads

Summary: The dynamic increase factor (DIF) of rubber concrete increased with strain rate, and its toughness was greater than that of ordinary concrete. Additionally, the addition of rubber particles could slow down damage accumulation and increase deformation lag effect, contributing to the higher DIF of rubber concrete.

Compressive strength of rubberized concrete: Regression and GA-BPNN approaches using ultrasonic pulse velocity

Yifan Zhang et al.

Summary: Rubberized concrete is a solution for waste rubber disposal, and non-destructive testing techniques are used to assess existing concrete structures. Researchers have proposed relationships between UPV and compressive strength of rubberized concrete. This study introduces regression and GA-BPNN models to estimate compressive strength with UPV, with regression model requiring less computation work and GA-BPNN offering higher accuracy for precise estimations. Results show that all models are effective in predicting compressive strength, with the pure quadratic stepwise regression model having the best performance.

Properties of concrete with untreated and treated crumb rubber - A review

Rida Alwi Assaggaf et al.

Summary: Crumb rubber has been used to enhance the impact and toughness of concrete, and the flexibility of rubber aggregates could be the key to solving failure due to fatigue. Although there may be a marginal reduction in mechanical properties, appropriate treatment of crumb rubber can overcome this issue. The use of crumb rubber concrete can have a positive impact on the environment by solving disposal problems and conserving natural aggregates.

Scope of reusing waste shredded tires in concrete and cementitious composite materials: A review

Amin Hamdi et al.

Summary: Over 1.5 billion waste tires are generated annually worldwide, with a predicted 4% increase in demand reaching 3 billion units by 2019. The black pollution caused by these non-biodegradable waste tires poses a potential threat to the environment. Incorporating discarded tires into concrete as aggregates can be an effective way to immobilize waste and reduce environmental impact.
