Fluorine-free, robust and self-healing superhydrophobic cotton fabric based on the disulfide bond exchange reaction

Xixue Yang et al.

Summary: This study reports a superhydrophobic surface fabricated from silica nanoparticles, 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane, and a 4-6% (mercaptopropyl) methylsiloxane-dimethylsiloxane co-polymer by dip-coating and thermal curing processes. The coated fabric exhibits high durability and withstands repeated laundering, abrasion, and acid-base corrosion cycles. A disulfide bond exchange reaction promotes self-healing and allows the coating to maintain high static water contact angles after multiple washing cycles.

Synthesis of waterborne polyurethane by inserting polydimethylsiloxane and constructing dual crosslinking for obtaining the superior performance of waterborne coatings

Fuqiang Li et al.

Summary: This study addresses the issue of decreased mechanical properties in waterborne polyurethane (WPU) when polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is embedded into the molecule chains. By introducing an intramolecular crosslinking agent and a post-crosslinking agent, a dual crosslinking structure is constructed, resulting in improved extensibility and tenacity of the WPU films. The findings suggest that the developed emulsion has potential applications in the leather industry.

Morphologies and mechanical properties of basalt fibre processed at elevated temperature

Dan Xing et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different temperature treatments in air atmosphere on the morphology and properties of basalt fibre (BF). It was found that heat treatment led to the formation of crystals on the fibre surface, changing the properties of BF. The reduction in tensile strength of BF occurred in three temperature ranges: 100-400 degrees C, where the decomposition of organic sizing on the fibre surface exposed more defect structures; 500-600 degrees C, where the amorphous matrix in the fibre experienced phase separation and structural relaxation; and 700-1000 degrees C, where the formation of various crystals caused structural modification.

Hydrophobic functionalization of cellulose nanocrystals for enhanced corrosion resistance of polyurethane nanocomposite coatings

Tizazu H. Mekonnen et al.

Summary: In this study, a stiff, hydrophobic, and corrosion protective polyurethane nanocomposite coating was fabricated by incorporating surface modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), which improved thermal properties and material wettability of the modified CNC. The incorporation of modified CNC in PU not only improved thermomechanical properties but also enhanced interfacial adhesion between the nanoparticle and the PU matrix, leading to reduced water absorption properties of the PU composites. Salt spray and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies exhibited better anticorrosion behaviors of the fabricated nanocomposite as compared to PU, making the CNC modification through silanization a robust and appealing material for polymer composite applications.
