Optical properties of diamond-like carbon films prepared by pulsed laser deposition onto 3D surface substrate

Summary: This research successfully grown uniform DLC films on large curved silicon substrates using a 3D motion deposition setup and correlated mathematical models. The results showed similar optical constants of the DLC films in different regions and low deviation in average transmittance in the medium infrared band, improving infrared detection imaging performance. This study contributes to expanding the application of pulsed laser deposition in the optical field.

Temperature-Adaptive Ultralubricity of a WS2/a-C Nanocomposite Coating: Performance from Room Temperature up to 500 °C

Summary: This study reports on the ultralubricity of a high-temperature resilient nanocomposite WS2/a-C tribocoating, which maintains a coefficient of friction of around 0.02 up to approximately 500 degrees C and shows a similar ultralubricity even after annealing at 450 degrees C and cooling back down to room temperature, indicating a tribological self-adaptation over a broad temperature range. High-resolution TEM observations reveal the formation of WS2 nanoplatelets dynamically and their contribution to sustainable ultralubricity, while the declining triboperformance beyond 500 degrees C is linked to sulfur loss rather than the earlier suggested transformation into inferior WO3 via oxidation. This self-adaptive WS2/a-C tribocoating shows promise for constant ultralubrication with excellent thermal performance.
