Towards a sustainable viticulture: The combination of deficit irrigation strategies and agroecological practices in Mediterranean vineyards. A review and update

Pascual Romero et al.

Summary: This study reviews different physiologically-based water-saving irrigation strategies and methods, and discusses how integrating these practices with sustainable soil management and agroecological practices can enhance efficiency, quality, and resilience in Mediterranean vineyards. Analysis includes deficit irrigation strategies, latest advances in regulated deficit irrigation and partial root zone drying, and other less common irrigation methods to improve water use efficiency and quality in vineyards. The research also explores sustainable soil management practices and their potential benefits in creating more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems in semi-arid areas.

Effects of irrigation and fertilization on different potato varieties growth, yield and resources use efficiency in the Northwest China

Yingying Xing et al.

Summary: The scarcity of irrigation water is a major constraint for global crop production, especially for potato growth in arid and semiarid regions. Field experiments were conducted to study the effects of irrigation amount, fertilizer rate, and potato variety on potato yield, quality, and water and fertilizer productivity. The results showed significant impacts of these factors on potato growth, with Feiurita variety performing better than Xiapoti variety. The W2F3V1 and W3F2V1 treatments were recommended as the best water and fertilizer management in sandy loam soils in Northwest China.

Rapid stomatal closure contributes to higher water use efficiency in major C-4 compared to C-3 Poaceae crops

Kengo Ozeki et al.

Summary: Understanding the water use characteristics of C-3 and C-4 crops is crucial for ensuring food security. Research shows that C-4 crops exhibit faster stomatal opening and closure compared to C-3 crops, potentially due to smaller stomatal size and higher stomatal density.

Review on Partial Root-zone Drying irrigation: Impact on crop yield, soil and water pollution

Maryam Slamini et al.

Summary: Water availability is a major constraint for crop production, causing conflicts in freshwater allocation. Conventional irrigation is unsustainable due to water depletion, leading to the need for improved water-saving irrigation methods. Partial Root-zone Drying is an effective irrigation technique that saves water but can affect plant root activity.

Summary: Non-photochemical chlorophyll fluorescence quenching (NPQ) is a highly researched topic in photosynthesis, with a focus on the molecular mechanisms behind it. Recent studies have delved into the significance of NPQ in protecting RCII and monitoring qE component's lifespan, as well as the potential interplay between thylakoid membrane geometry, LHCII dynamics, PsbS protein, and thylakoid lipids in inducing a qE-related conformational change.

Evaluation of regulated deficit irrigation strategies for oil olives: A case study for two modern Israeli cultivars

Alon Ben-Gal et al.

Summary: The study found that implementing regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) in olive oil production can increase water productivity and optimize oil quality, but may not necessarily result in significant yield increase. In certain treatments, although irrigation was reduced, there was less than 15% reduction in yield after 6 years.

Chlorophyll fluorescence and water content parameters are good biomarkers for selecting drought tolerant eucalyptus clones

Lilian Alves Carvalho Reis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the functional diversity of eucalyptus clones with differential tolerance to drought by measuring gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, and water content. Different groups of plants were identified based on stem growth parameters and physiological processes, with chlorophyll fluorescence, F-0/F-m ratio, and relative water content proving to be strong predictors of behavior under different water regimes. These tools will aid in early plant selection for tree improvement programs and sustainable eucalyptus forest management.

A vital role of chitosan nanoparticles in improvisation the drought stress tolerance in Catharanthus roseus (L.) through biochemical and gene expression modulation

E. F. Ali et al.

Summary: This study is the first to demonstrate the use of chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) in alleviating drought stress of Catharanthus roseus by enhancing antioxidant potential and gene expression related to alkaloid biosynthesis. CSNPs increased proline accumulation and the activity of catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), reducing drought-induced oxidative stress and preserving membrane integrity. Additionally, CSNPs led to increased alkaloid accumulation and upregulated gene expression associated with alkaloid biosynthesis under drought stress.

SAVING WATER USED FOR VEGETABLE PRODUCTION BY APPLYING REGULATED DEFICIT IRRIGATION PRACTICES

Yu-Sen Chang et al.

Summary: The study found that RDI-30 significantly increased water use efficiency in maize and lettuce compared to other treatments, while there was a decrease in water use efficiency in garland chrysanthemum. A significant correlation between WUEi and WUEyield in maize plants and lettuce plants was observed, indicating that WUEi can be a useful tool for estimating yields and biomass contents. This nondestructive method of evaluating water deficits in plants can be valuable for large-scale water management of vegetable plants, particularly in conserving scarce water resources.
