Origins of Electron-Transfer Regime in Persulfate-Based Nonradical Oxidation Processes

Wei Ren et al.

Summary: This review discusses the use of persulfate-based nonradical oxidation processes (PS-NOPs) in wastewater purification, focusing on recent advances in nonradical electron-transfer regimes, including design of catalysts, in situ/operando characterization/analytics, and understanding the origins of electron-transfer mechanisms. The study found that persulfate is activated by a catalyst to form surface activated complexes, which interact directly or indirectly with target pollutants for oxidation.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of different exposed crystal facets on the catalytic performance of Mn2O3 for NO oxidation by constructing rod- and particle-like Mn2O3 nanocrystals. The results show that different crystal structures lead to diverse catalytic behaviors of Mn2O3, especially in terms of poisoning resistance. Additionally, this work provides valuable design principles for future studies to improve other metal oxide catalysts.

Mechanochemically tailoring oxygen vacancies of MnO2 for efficient degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A with peroxymonosulfate

Sylvestre Ndayiragije et al.

Summary: Oxygen vacancy engineering can enhance the catalytic activity of metal oxides. Using a solvent-free mechanochemical method, the VO levels on the surface of commercial MnO2 were successfully tailored, leading to improved catalytic performance. Singlet oxygen, generated from PMS and lattice oxygen of MnO2, plays a crucial role in the degradation of TBBPA. The Mn4+/Mn3+ redox couple is more important in catalytic activity.

Mn2O3 as an Electron Shuttle between Peroxymonosulfate and Organic Pollutants: The Dominant Role of Surface Reactive Mn(IV) Species

Hongchao Li et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the mechanism involved in the Mn2O3-catalyzed peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process by separating the PMS activation and the pollutant oxidation process. Mn2O3 acts as a mediator between the organic substrates and PMS, facilitating electron transfer and the formation of surface reactive Mn(IV) species responsible for the degradation of organic contaminants and the formation of singlet oxygen.

Regulating Crystal Facets of MnO2 for Enhancing Peroxymonosulfate Activation to Degrade Pollutants: Performance and Mechanism

Juncong Fu et al.

Summary: Different crystal facets on catalyst surface have different catalytic activity. Acquiring a highly reactive facet through surface regulation is an efficient strategy to promote the oxidative decomposition of wastewater organic pollutants via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. In this study, three facet-engineered alpha-MnO2 with different exposed facets were prepared, among which the 310-MnO2 showed superior PMS activation performance and promising potential for practical wastewater treatment.

CuO with (001)-plane exposure efficiently induces peroxymonosulfate to form =Cu-OOSO3-intermediates directly oxidizing organic contaminants in water

Lele Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of CuO crystal planes on the properties of the Cu/PMS coupling system were investigated. CuO-10, with Cu atoms exposed on the (001) plane, was synthesized and found to have excellent catalytic performance in degrading BPA. Its reaction rate constant was 14 times higher than that of commercial CuO with O atoms exposed on the (010) plane. CuO-10 also exhibited a wide pH range adaptability and produced fewer radicals compared to CuO-C in the PMS oxidation system. The CuO/PMS system was shown to oxidize organic contaminants through an oxygen-atom-transfer mechanism, making it easier to degrade organic pollutants compared to the UV/PMS system.

Co3O4 crystal plane regulation to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate in water: The role of oxygen vacancies

Lele Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of different crystal plane exposures of Co3O4 nanomaterials on the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in water. It was found that Co3O4-NR with (110) plane exposure showed superior activity in efficiently removing bisphenol A (BPA), with singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) playing a dominant role in the degradation process. The study also explored the evolution of lattice defects (oxygen vacancies) during PMS activation.

Carbamazepine degradation through peroxymonosulfate activation by a-MnO2 with the different exposed facets: Enhanced radical oxidation by facet-dependent surface effect

Haoxuan Wei et al.

Summary: Removing carbamazepine (CBZ) from wastewater through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation with low-toxic and earth-abundant heterogeneous catalysts is highly desired. In this study, three facet engineered alpha-MnO2 were prepared for activating PMS towards CBZ degradation. The 310-alpha-MnO2/PMS system removes 100% of CBZ in 30 min with the kinetics constant per surface area of 0.0803 min(-1)center dot m(-2), which is 4.12 and 1.65 times higher than those of 110-alpha-MnO2 and 100-alpha-MnO2, respectively. Sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-), hydroxyl radicals, and singlet oxygen were detected in 310-alpha-MnO2/PMS system, and SO(4)(center dot-)made the major contribution to CBZ degradation. Interestingly, the CBZ degradation performances of 310-alpha-MnO2, 110-alpha-MnO2, and 100-alpha-MnO(2 )are not linear correlated with Mn(III) content, electron transfer capacity, and PMS adsorption energy, all of which are commonly regarded as key factors towards PMS activation. Based on both experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, it is suggested that despite the adsorption amount of CBZ on alpha-MnO2 is negligible, the facet-dependent surface effect still plays an important role on SO(4)(center dot-)dominant CBZ degradation, which could be attributed to the stretched bond length of the adsorbed CBZ. This study would provide an effective method for CBZ degradation, and guide the development of heterogeneous catalysts/PMS system for organic pollutants degradation.
