Effect of SO2 on HCl removal over ethanol-hydrated CaO adsorbent: Mechanism of competitive adsorption and product layer shielding

Xiaoshuo Liu et al.

Summary: The elimination of hydrogen chloride (HCl) is crucial for coal-fired power plants to manage wastewater and ensure equipment safety. A novel ethanol-hydrated CaO adsorbent has been developed with superior HCl removal efficiency compared to traditional dechlorinators. However, the presence of SO2 in flue gas poses challenges to HCl adsorption due to competition on the alkaline adsorbent. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to investigate the influence of SO2 on HCl adsorption and the underlying mechanisms. The results reveal that SO2 consumption of active Ca sites, reduced alkalinity, and surface activity hinder HCl removal. Moreover, DFT calculations indicate that the high adsorption energy of SO2 affects the active sites for HCl removal, leading to apparent activity shielding on the adsorbent surface.

A DFT study on the mechanism of HCl and CO2 capture by CaO

Xiaotong Ma et al.

Summary: CaO-based materials are effective sorbents for removing HCl and CO2, with HCl having a preference for interacting with surface oxygen atoms on the CaO (100) surface. The adsorption energy per HCl decreases as repulsion between HCl molecules increases with rising coverage, indicating a competing adsorption behavior with CO2. The presence of HCl inhibits CO2 adsorption and promotes CO2 desorption by lowering the absorption energy and reaction barrier in the HCl/CaO system compared to pristine CaO (100).

Co-hydrothermal dechlorination of PVC plastic and bagasse: Hydrochar combustion characteristics and gas emission behavior

Zhuang Liu et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal treatment of PVC can efficiently remove chlorine to produce low Cl hydrochar for solid fuel. This study investigated the combustion behavior and Cl migration during combustion of PVC-derived hydrochar. The hydrothermal temperature was found to be the main factor affecting the degradation and dechlorination of PVC. Co-treatment of PVC recycled plastics with biomass increased the dechlorination efficiency, and the emitted Cl species depended on the Cl content in hydrochar and combustion temperature.

Ecological network analysis of industrial wastes metabolism based on input-output model for Jiangsu, China

Guiliang Tian et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the relationships of industrial waste discharge among different sectors in Jiangsu Province by constructing an industrial waste metabolic input-output (IWMIO) model. The results indicate that indirect discharge of industrial waste is greater than direct discharge in the industrial waste metabolism system. The tertiary industry, chemical industry, smelting and pressing of metals, and production and supply of electricity and heat dominate the industrial waste metabolism system. Certain sectors, such as mining and washing of coal, manufacture of non-metallic mineral products, and smelting and pressing of metals, have mutualism and competition relationships with other sectors, indicating the significance of controlling waste discharge in these sectors for achieving emission reduction targets.
